21st Birthday Suggestions! :D
I am new to Chowhound~ But I have always loved this website!
My 21st birthday is this Thursday (11/11)! Woo! But I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what I should do at midnight of Thursday~ When I actually "turn" 21! And if anyone had any suggestions for the night of! Downtown SD? PB? Gaslamp?
I am in the La Jolla area, and was considering TGIF... but I heard the one here is not that great~
Any ideas? and thank you! :D
That is a great idea! You only turn 21 once and you should do it at a fun bar/restaurant. Craft and Commerce has good food and great cocktails in Little Italy.
If you want to stay in La Jolla (and by La Jolla I don't mean University City/UTC) go to Whisk-n-ladlle (fun bar) or the bar at George's California Modern.
TGIFriday's is, well to be honest, a cruddy chain. Why would you spend an important birthday at a chain that only attempts to be mediocre to suit the masses?
Yes, I agree completely with these suggestions. Either Starlite or Craft & Commerce would be great. Neighborhood/Noble Experiment would be good too.
This week is San Diego Beer Week so if ddalki_kiss is into beer at all he/she might want to look into some of those events. A few good options on Thursday:
Small Bar - Maui Brewing night - http://sdbw.org/events/1774/
30th Street Green Flash Progressive Dinner at Sea Rocket, Ritual Tavern, The Linkery, El Take It Easy, Blind Lady, etc. (this is a great option) - http://sdbw.org/events/2148/
Blind Lady - New Belgium night - http://sdbw.org/events/1704/
If you wanted to end the 30th street night with a PB scene you could end at True North - http://sdbw.org/events/2056/
If you want actual PB, the San Diego Taproom is having a sort of North County breweries night: http://sdbw.org/events/1911/
And last but not least, there's always Eleven since it'll be 11/11 - http://sdbw.org/events/1780/
And I just realized that several of these places might not be open after midnight. Are you looking for Wednesday night or Thursday night? I'm confused.
I'm sorry for the confusion but I was actually looking for both Wednesday night and Thursday night! haha
I heard about PB Bar & Grill, have you been?
I am not a huge fan of beer but I would like to try it out more, so these suggestions are great! Thank you! And I am a girl~ haha to clear up any confusion
I have been to PBBar and Grill for College Football Saturdays for the past 5+ years. The last time was this past Saturday for Brunch. The food here is very very good.
There are also various daily Specials. Wednesday is burger and beer for $5, Thursday is Sushi. http://pbbarandgrill.com/specials.html
There is one game every year which starts at 5:30 San Diego time and being there at 5:30 on a Saturday night is very crowded.
Please don't go to TGIF! And please don't stay in UTC! As long as you're not going for a 21 shots kind of 21st birthday, I would definitely go to one of the speakeasies downtown. Get a small group of friends, dress to the nines, and have some great cocktails at either Noble Experiment or Prohibition. At least, that's how I wish I would've spent my 21st birthday...
Happy 21st Birthday!
Party like its 1999...rooms at the US Grant Hotel on expedia are $139 for 5* hotel under deals on 11/11..then you can hang out in the Gaslamp with all your friends eating and drinking..
Tower23 in PB is another thought and drinks at JRDN and then bar crawl your way down Garnet..cab it all the way down to the Night Owl and you can make it a 'dive bar' crawl..
Another option is Vegas baby..
Report back and have a great time!
Actually, I think PB Bar and Grill would be perfect for your 21st Birthday.
You're turning 21. Not 25, not 30.
You need a place that has cheap booze, and is filled with people your age looking to have a good time. And in PB you will get both, plus 20 other places you can easily walk to if the place doesn't do it for you (but really, how could it not? Did I mention the cheap booze?). If memory serves, PB Bar and Grill also has a DJ and dancing and tons of seating.
Starlite, Noble Experiment, Craft and Commerce, etc. are all excellent places. But the drinks and food are priced accordingly, and they are very popular with everyone who's already had their 21st birthday party years ago. So, getting a table is tough, and it can be completely unrealistic for any group bigger than 4 people. Yeah, it might be nice to go there and have a blast the weekend AFTER your 21st birthday with your closest friends. But trying to bring all your friends to a place that has $10 drinks and $13 burgers is going to drain the funds quick. Not to mention, you're just starting out in your proper drinking life, so that top-shelf stuff isn't really what you should be worrying about. You'll get there eventually. Besides, a place like PB Bar and Grill already carries very good caliber mainstream stuff anyway...Grey Goose, Kettle One, etc. Anything above that is for the connoisseur.
PB Bar and Grill gives you cheap drinks, and doesn't ever really jump out of a college kid's price range. Yes, you'll grow out of PB soon. But take your time. You need a place where you can get absolutely plastered, with your friends, comfortably. Try doing that at Starlite or Noble Experiment and not only will you not have any room to really settle in because those places are so busy, but you'll probably get kicked out the moment you got as loud and drunk-off-your-ass as you should be getting on your 21st birthday.
Another option is La Puerta in the gaslamp. Good Mexican style food, and great happy hour drinks and lots of specials. Open late too. Although it's much smaller compared to the bigger places in PB and gets very busy at night too. I'd stick with PB Bar and Grill.
Happy birthday, don't forget to put the number of a cab on speed dial.
Thank you so much for this great post! Too be honest, going to a bar with a large group of friends made me worry about the prices and the atmospheres of certain bars. I didn't want us to be too inappropriately rowdy or loud, and judging by the pictures and reviews of the other bars, I felt that we might be a burden - and I most definitely did not want to get kicked out. I had a wonderful 21st birthday and ended up going to PB Bar and Grill. As we are college students, we didn't really have a whole lot of money to spend on expensive drinks and we wanted a place to dance too :) We are actually planning on going to Noble Experiment soon, but it'll be a much smaller group. PB Bar and Grill wasn't the most amazing experience I've ever had in terms of service, but what do you expect from a bar on a college night? We all had lots of fun and will probably go back later~
