My dc & I shared the 20oz ribeye at Russel House Tavern. We thought it was as good as a steakhouse.

I don't know if you would consider it top quality but I've had excellent steak frites at Central Kitchen in Cambridge.

I had a very nice steak at Rendezvous (Central Square) last week.

Can't speak specific to the availability of steak on the current menu, but Craigie on Main is one of the most high quality meat-centric options in Cambridge. Pig's head and all...

KO Prime is good, but Grill 23 is stellar. Priced accordingly.

just bear in mind that steak portions at Craigie can be quite small...sort of like 9 Park, it's just a hint of steak, if they do'nt say on the menu how many ounces, you can assume the worst :) Another way to look at it is, if you ask them whether it's served sliced or not and they say yes, you can assume they do that to make the steak look like it covers more of the plate than it actually does. has anybody had the steak at Scampo?

ve had the steak at Scampo. It is quite good and it is served sliced. There may be more than one steak on the menu and I believe that the menu lists the size of the portion.

If you're dead-set on staying in Cambridge, Frank's Steakhouse at 2310 Mass. Ave. might be worth a look. I've had some quite good steaks there as well as some OK ones. I'm not a regular (mostly I cook my own steaks at home), but if I'm out with a group that wants steak there are worse options.

Frank's is an OK, neighborhood -type place, but the quality is nowhere near the level of the expensive steak houses.

But at Frank's you can have three courses and sides for the price of the cheapest cut at one of the expensive Boston chains. You can also play Keno and listen to cabaret on Saturdays.

I don't care much for steakhouses, but I'd rather have fun and eat decently at Frank's for 1/4 the price of a Boston steakhouse chain.

I've always found that the beef dishes at the top restaurants (like Craigie) easily best anything a steakhouse can offer.

Capitol Grille in Boston is a great option for a top quality steak and it's just over the river! Not too many options in Cambridge, unfortunately. Rialto in harvard square has a nice Wolfes Neck (Pineland Farms) sirloin always on their menu but that's really the only steak option there. Craigie on Main might be running steak but I would call to check first.
              Good luck!

Recommendation: go to Boston. You are right there.

It sounds like Boston may be a better choice than Cambridge. I've dined at all the chains - - including Capital Grille, and am looking for something unique to Boston. Any recommendation for the best (non-chain) steak house in Boston? Thanks.

There is a lot of material if you search on Grill 23 and Prezza. The Oak Room is another possibility. KO Prime is another but I have never eaten there.

In Cambridge there are decent ethnic meat options (portuguese steak with sauce, Brazilian churrasco, Puerto Rican bistec encebollado) and places for steak frites (again something covered before) Frank's is the only steakhouse per-se and its not my cup of tea.

I've also heard good things from friends about KO Prime. Never been myself but I trust my friends. It also seems to get good write ups on this board.

                  Restaurant or market? Or both?

Sorry, I should have been more specific - - we are looking for a restaurant that serves excellent steak. Carty's response - - go to Boston - - is what I suspected. That Boston has many offerings, but not Cambridge.
