Burger Spot in Garden City

I debated posting because I can't give a good evaluation of the burger yet, but I thought I might at least post my experience as something to consider.

Burger 9.5 in Merrick has recently stopped serving lunch on weekdays; I don't know if that's a good sign or a bad one, but I liked the place a whole lot, so I'll miss being able to go there. So, today I went to the relatively new Burger Spot on 7th Ave. in Garden City, and ordered a burger medium-rare with mushrooms and onions.

The burger arrived, and it was dripping with juice--a good sign. And it was cooked medium rare--take THAT, Five Guys! But... what's this? Some... sauce?

Yes, it was their "house sauce," which I'd have known was automatically put on the burger if I'd just taken the few seconds necessary to read the menu board, Guess I automatically assumed things were served undressed unless requested otherwise; mea culpa. But the house sauce is mayo-based, akin to a Thousand Island dressing but lighter in color, and I hate mayo. Detest it. And so that's all I could really taste: mayo. I guess that when you really dislike something, it stands out.

Anyway, that did it for me, but it isn't really their fault. Even with that hated mayo, the burger was head and shoulders over 5G; I'd certainly be willing to give it another try (hold the house sauce).

While there, I saw on their takeout menu that they have a web site, but I don't seem to be able to Google it.

Yup, and there it is: "special house sauce." Always RTFM.

    2. Has anyone been here recently? Is this place any good?

I've been back. My overall assessment is along the lines of my earlier post: a pretty good fast food style hamburger. I like it a LOT better than Five Guys, not as well as American Burgers in Rockville Center.

Scott, do you find American to have better quality?

I think were talking more strategy than quality. That is, I have no complaints about Burger Spot's quality; the difference for me is that American Burger is more a bar-style burger than what they serve at Burger Spot--that is, thicker. It's not a matter of quantity: I much prefer a more thickly-packed single patty over two smaller fast food-style patties. That may in part be due thickness letting the outside get a good char before the inside becomes overdone.

Also, American has a far more interesting choice of toppings. Cheese doesn't thrill me on a burger, so I either go for mostly plain (lettuce, onion, never ketchup or mayo) or for toppings like sauteed mushrooms or jalapenos. American even offers things like grilled plantains.
