Eat like a local, where to go?

Heading into NYC for a show and seeing the xmas sights in December. I want to stay away from the tourist trap restaurants. We want to eat where the locals go for good grub. We are staying near the theater district but willing to take a taxi or subway to have a great meal. Where should we go? Better to eat after the show? Where to get a great burger?

  1. Calvin,

Some more specifics on what you're looking for would help us give you better advice. Budget per person for food, excluding tax and tip? What types of cuisine? Desired atmospheres?

As for a burger, I love Spotted Pig on W 11th St in the W Village.

We like more on the pub/casual side but still good food. As a native new yorker I know it costs to eat in the city, so probably up to 50 a per in not out of the question.

Is that $50 including tax, tip, and wine/booze?

    2. Do you want a thick pub style burger or a thinner, fast food style burger? How do you like your burger, with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon? How much are you willing to pay? For example, Minetta Tavern's Black Label burger (made from high quality dry aged meat) is $26! I like the Spotted Pig's burger, too, but note that they don't offer any other kind of cheese than blue cheese. And I'm not sure if you can get lettuce, tomato, or onions on it.
