Canteen - get it together!

In general, I am depressed about the lack of good sandwich options in Central Square, and furious about the lack of sandwich options there after about 8pm. I just don't get it. I think a solid sandwich place in Central would crush. Cutty's, are you listening? It's about time for a second location with longer hours, isn't it?

When Canteen opened, I thought they would fill the hole perfectly. Nope. When they first opened a year or so ago, I tried them a few times in the first week. They ran out of stuff regularly or simply didn't offer things on the menu. Opening jitters, I get it, no sweat. This kept happening months after they opened - this made me nervous. Now that they've been around a bit, I can't really forgive it. I've enjoyed most of the sandwiches, but they don't know how to run a shop.

I just called to place an order. Sometimes I want a sandwich for dinner and eat after 8. Weird, I know.

Me: "I'd like to place an order for pickup."
Canteen: "Umm. It depends........we ran out of bread."
Me: "Ummmm, ok, can I get the thai peanut salad?"
Canteen: "Sure."
Me: "Can I get it with chicken?"
Canteen: "Sorry, we ran out of chicken."
Me: "Umm, do you have steak?"
Canteen: "Sorry. We don't. This is really embarrassing. I'm sorry."
Me: "Ok, thanks. I'm going to go somewhere else."

What is going on there? I don't get it. How can they still be making these absolutely amateur mistakes?

Also, I've noticed a few times that they will close an hour or more before their listed hours. Not cool.

I want to like the place, but they are making it impossible.

Your assessment is spot on. Canteen is in our general neighborhood, and we are already done with it. They are always out of everything. The service is shoddy. Rather than staying on top of all the opening kinks, they went and completely changed their menu over the past few weeks. On top of all of this it is a rip off ($25 for 2 sandwiches and drinks the last time we went).

2nd your call for a Cutty's over here. For now, Cardullo's or Darwin's (original location only) are our preferred options in the square. However, looking forward to Al's State Street opening.

Yeah, you're exactly right about the price, it really is ridiculous. Totally not worth it.

Ok, I guess they haven't been opened as long as I seem to remember - I think I was adding in all the time since they first announced.

      Doesn't change my opinion.
