Berkeley: Walking Distance from Zellerbach (Dinner)

Mari Nov 4, 2010 10:27 AM

I am looking for dinner suggestions within walking distance from Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley for Friday. The idea is to get there early, park, eat, and walk back for a performance.

I am looking for something cheap, but not student budget cheap (e.g. no burgers, Top Dog, pizza slices, etc.). I know Alborz is close by but is there anything else in the area of Alborz that be consist of a nice sit down dinner for two for about $40 total?
How are the Indian restaurants around there? Middle Eastern?

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately, going to Berkeley from the South Bay on a Friday took much longer than I anticipated so a sit down dinner was not an option. We went to Intermezzo and spent $35 including parking at Zellerbach. I was tempted to have a slice at Blondie's.

      Salad at Intermezzo?

Not this time. We had a chicken salad sandwich, a BLTA with a lot of bacon and a salty split pea soup. I always like their pineapple ague fresca too.

There's a hotel 4-5 blocks away, a white house-looking thing on a corner, that has a bar/restaurant. i can't for the life of me remember what it's called. went there for Kathy Griffin a few weeks ago. didn't eat (just wine) but saw others' food and it all looked good. Casual but nice atmo. anyone know what i'm talking about so vaguely?

It's not on Shattuck tho.... it's uphill from Zellerbach and to the right. Hotel Durant, just got it. Henry's is the restaurant: http://www.henrysberkeley.com/

I think it's closer to about 3 or 4 long blocks.

Your are , of course. correct. I only looked at the numbers but for some reason Google mapvstarts at International House and not Zellerbach. Make it less than 1/2 mile.

Ippuku oozes atmosphere, and I highly recommend it. A $40 bill means $32 in food without alcohol. At Ippuku it'll be a very light but nice meal.

Or go to Great China for their double skin and sauteed crab. They will be crowded on Friday night though.

if you forego the alcohol, and pick carefully, you can have a nice light meal at Ippuku for $40 total.

Burgers at Gather - best burger in town. (I know you said no burgers, but this is a nice, sit-down place that does a fabulous, gourmet burger).

I've been meaning to try the new BBQ place on Oxford (Ironwood). Food looks good and definitely in your price range.

If you're willing to walk a bit farther or park twice: Mint Leaf has delicious Indian food in your price range and is pretty close to campus.

If you can up the price just a bit, I'd say Venus. It gets lots of pre-show biz for the Berkeley Rep and seems to fit that slot well.

What's on my short list is SLOW. It sounds interesting and the price range is w/i your range. It's counter service and I have walked by and it looks really casual...but the food sounds pretty good.

What about Adagia up on Bancroft? $40 might be hard though.

Or they have a tie-in with Cal Performances right at Zellerbach. Can't imagine it has much, if any, restaurant atmosphere. Has anyone tried it?

adagia is okay. they had a great review in the chronicle but, aside from it being sit-down, i'd rather eat at one of the student places on telegraph.

if it's not raining and you don't mind a short walk, i'd go to Le Bateau Ivre. it would probably be a bit more than $40 however (plus drinks). i think it's the same price range as adagia.

another option would be to come in from the west side and get shochu and appetizers at ippuku. if you're adventurous, you could even have a raw chicken with quail egg appetizer!. if not, they have lots of great dishes - esp. the chicken wings, the braised turnips, and almost anything from the grill.

gather is another option also in west berkeley. they were listed in michelin 2011 as a big gourmand restaurant (high value with good quality). they might also fall just outside the $40 budget though.

most of the best indian places in berkeley are just outside walking distance on university. if you're willing to drive in, people say a lot of good things about ajanta on solano, but i haven't tried it. i actually think the food at naan and curry on telegraph is pretty good, but it's somewhat dumpy inside so not good if you are looking for a nice dining experience.

if $40 budget is a hard cap, i'd consider either raleigh's or intermezzo. more of a student or university experience, but the food is still pretty good and you won't go over budget.

                  I haven't been, but there's Cyprus Restaurant: http://cyprusrestaurant.webs.com/menu...

I like Jupiter a lot too but on Friday nights the wait can be a bit uncertain, particularly if you're trying to catch a performance.

I like Cyprus. It's bare-bones, atmosphere-wise, but the food is well made and cooked to order. Standard Middle Eastern fare, plus some Persian dishes (the couple who run it, who are sweethearts, are Persian Bahá’ís).

Another nearby choice in the right price range is Turkish Kitchen.

Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen is pretty good. Nearby Jupiter's has good wood-fired pizza's and draft beers in a neat outdoor setting.
