ISO ice cream cake Boston, MA to Nashua, NH

  • 9

Carvel, the ideal ice cream cake maker of my youth, has closed it's store in Chelmsford. The next closest store in in Connecticut.

Does anyone have recommendations on where to get an ice cream cake for a birthday party on Friday?

If it were summer I'd head to Kimaball's but alas, they are not an option. I found Gary's Ice Cream (http://www.garysicecream.com/). Any reviews?

  1. Most supermarkets still stock Carvel cakes. Another chain option is Coldstone Creamery.

Both Toscanini's and JP Licks has ice cream cakes, if you order in advance

    1. Live in Chelmsford, never been to Gary's. I cannot imagine it would be bad, but I'd never go anywhere other than Kimballs for ice Cream.

We used to frequent Bedford Farms, and that would be a great option for you as well. Never got one of their cakes, but their Ice Cream Pies were excellent! Their Ice Cream is from Richardsons.

Actually, I think they make most of their own ice cream now, and IMO many are better than Richardson's, particularly the vanilla based flavors.

      2. There was a Carvel store on 28 in Salem, NH and, as far as I know, it hasn't closed. I like Mad Maggie's cakes in North Andover as well. They do custom orders with a few days' notice.

        1. Meletharb in Wakefiled has ice cream cakes. Really creamy ice cream.

            I second this recommendation!

Also AFAIK there's still a Carvel in Malden. Their site still lists it at
            657 Eastern Avenue
            Malden, MA 02148
            (781) 324-9672

I grew up on Carvel cakes too but I'd go to Meletharb's first, absolutely. It's very convenient to 128 and not far from 93.

          2. My friend ordered a Toscanini's ice cream cake for my baby shower. It was surprisingly affordable, they custom-made a batch of ice cream in the flavor we wanted, and she commented on how good their customer service was. I can't eat that slime on the outside of Carvel cakes anymore-- I think it's hydrogenated something. Anyways, Toscanini's blows Carvel out of the water- I highly recommend it!
