new college student in Santa Clarita???
Just moved here from Arizona, and was wondering if there are any great places up in Santa Clarita!? I have a car, so I can also go into hollywood and the surrounding area, but I'm looking for something that I can afford, and don't have to drive too far to get!
Thanks so much!

Fish Tail Seafood Market & Grill is a great place for fresh and tasty lunches and dinners that won't break the bank. Everything is prepared to order in the open kitchen and the staff is spot on with their friendly service. When I had dinner there 3 days ago they told me that they are adding several new items this week so I'm anxious to head back and check them out!

Here's what I like that wasn't yet mentioned:
La Cocina Mexican- I LOVE the pescado with ranchero, their chips and salsa. I go to the one at Plum Canyon and Bouquet but, there is also one on Seco. Soon we'll have a Valley Produce (on Newhall Ranch road) a good place to find Eastern European products, great prices on fresh produce and meats/cheeses. They also fresh grind coffes which are great and inexpensive.

CalArts student?
I didn't do much chowing in the SCV when I was attending CalArts, but the places I remember thinking were pretty good were Siam Rice, Maria's, and some hole-in-the-wall Mexican place in Newhall my roommate took me to. I wish I knew the name, but I didn't know it then either.
Then there's the Saugus Café. Not really my thing, but some people seem to love it.
There's better chow in LA, but then you have to factor in the cost of gas.

Welcome! For great mexican, Torta Ahogada's on Main Street. For Indian, I like Karma over on Cinema Drive. For thai, I love Siam Rice on San Fernando. Excellent pick king. I like Athena's in Canyon Country, but their hours are iffy. For pizza, not cheap, but Vincenzio's make a good thick, garlicky crust, if you're into that sort of thing. For breakfast, Lilly's cafe at the Valencia Bowling ally on Lyons is good, as is Egg Plantation...and they serve booze, for your breakfast booze needs. I love the spicy salami sandwich at Maria's Italian Deli, and they have a nice selection of Italian products for home cooking. For higher end Italian, I like Sisleys at the mall. Dinks in the Granery Square strip mall has good bagels and the Hamburger Habit in the same center makes a tasty burger. Next to Hamburger Habit is The Alamo...good nachos. Not the best mexican around, but on a spring day on their patio with a margarita...makes everything taste better.
I hope this helps. We do have little pockets of goodness, you just have to look for them.

re: LA Buckeye Fan
You are confusing The Habit Burger Grill, a fast food style franchised, burger place, with many locations; and Hamburger Habit, more of a diner style burger place, which only has two locations, Palms, and Hollywood.
I couldn't believe, at one time, Hamburger Habit was rated one of the top burgers in LA.

I've been working in Santa Clarita for a few years now (live in Pasadena) and found it to full of chains, so if that's your thing, you set. If you want to step out of the chain, here is the list of places that I've found that I like, though I'm sure there are more.
Maru - probably the best restaurant in the SCV, the sushi is generally fresh
Urbane Cafe- it's a small Cali-chain, their bread is kind of funky, but the sandwich are decent and it comes with a pretty good salad
Italia Panetteria and Deli - pretty good Italian Deli with fresh made sandwiches from Boar's Head meat and some pasta dishes which are ok.
Maria's Italian-American Deli - an older, bigger version of Italia, with pizza as well. The sandwiches aren't as good (mostly because of the bread) but they have a bigger menu
Grill Kabob - as far as I know, the only decent Mediterranean place in the are, skip AtoZ, Mediterranean Skewer (for the love of god), and I much prefer Grill Kabob to Athena's in Canyon Country
Tri Tips - decent BBQ, again the best of the lot in SCV
Jasmine Thai - Pretty good straight ahead Thai food, I prefer this over 'Mom Can Cook'
Sabor - a "fancier" sit-down Mexican place which is waaay better than El Torito,
I will admit that I don't really know much about the Taco joints in the SCV, I go to Las Delicias on the Old Road, but only because it's close to work and the girls that run the place are nice. As for pizza, nothing has blown me away, but the is plent of OK pizza, Nick and Joe's, Tomato Joe's come to mind.

Mike is pretty honest with his reviews and doesn't give them any slack just because they are local, which I like.
Good luck and let me know if you find anything worthy
Michael

re: inlikeflt
Just a word about Grill Kabob. I was in a little hurry, so I ordered the gyros. Soonafter I noticed that the spit appeared non-functional, and the grill was just a big griddle, a la a short-order kitchen. Two frozen gyros patties were slapped on the grill, and in about 15 minutes I had my gyros. I can't remember the last time I took a bite of something, dumped it into the garbage, and then went looking for something else. I mean, I haven't been 6 years old in a long time. But Grill Kabob drove me to this behavior.
Gotta be something else up there...(or, at least the super-abundance of Med. food in the SFV is a short drive away around dinnertime!).

just looked at Mike's reviews and was reminded of a place I tried last time I was out there Taco Y Burritos El Pato. 2 brothers own this place and the meats are cooked outside on a wood grill. They serve breakfast lunch and dinner. Everything is in the 5 to 8 $ range. As Mike said they put whole beans on the tacos which was kind of strange but they also have grilled onions and jalapenoes on there too which were mighty tasty. Funny I found the menu in my suitcase this morning from when I was out there in April. They are located at 22950 Lyons Ave Newhall 661-254-2585
