Need a third restaurant in Carmel

We always spend three nights in Carmel during the first week of December. This year we are returning to Cantinetta Luca and Demetra Cafe which we have loved in the past. We had been going to Grasings for our third dinner but had an unpleasant experience a couple of years ago so last year went to Christopher's but some of our party were not impressed. Any current comments on Grasings? How about Fresh Cream which is new to Carmel Village this year. We're also considering Anton and Michel's but haven't heard much about it recently. Any others we should consider? Thanks.

  1. Have you decided to dine in Carmel only? If you are "mobile", I'd suggest Roy's in Pebble Beach at the Inn at Spanish Bay. There is a bagpiper during sunset while you enjoy cocktails around the fire pits, then into the restaurant for dinner. Roy's will validate your 17 mile drive entry fee.
If you want to stay in Carmel, have you considered Clint's place, the Mission Ranch? It is basic American food, ie prime rib, very nicely done in a casual atmosphere. They have a rather lively piano bar if that is of interest.
Fresh Cream isn't getting good reviews since they moved to Carmel. I only have dined with them at the old Monterey location, so have no personal knowledge of the new place.
The California Market at the Highlands Inn is a nice place for breakfast or lunch. Good food with a jaw-dropping view. Try the beef quesadillas. Just had them a couple of day ago...delish!

Well, there are four of us, all over 60 and we all enjoy wine. None of us wants to be the designated driver so we are, indeed, limiting ourselves to Carmel only so that we can walk to/from our hotel.

    2. We had lunch on Mother's Day at Cantinetta, it's a great choice. We also loved Demetra. We had our anniversary dinner at Anton & Michel in Dec. of 2008 and it was fantastic! Have you been to Pacific's Edge @ the Highland's Inn? It is a fine dining venue with excellent food and gorgeous views of the ocean. You may also want to consider the restaurnat at Auberge in downtown Carmel. If you want to go out to Carmel Valley, I have heard wonderful things about Marinus @ the Bernardus Lodge. :)

      1. We had a wonderful meal at Grasing's last September. Great food and service.

        1. Bob, check out this restaurant out on Trip Advisor and Yelp for some up-to-date reviews. I have a local Carmel/Monterey cyber friend who thinks this place is great. You must call for res though. Menu looks amazing...

Thanks, Gail, I'll check it out. We dined there many, many years ago and, frankly, I didn't realize it was still in existance.

If you do decide to give Escargot a try, please post back with your thoughts. We, too, were there several times *many* years ago.

          2. We had lunch at Grassings last sprinig and it was very good. Cassanova is within walking distance. We usually do lunch there simply b/c they are less busy and our dinner there also in the spring could have been better. Far from a disaster but not as good as lunch. So, go early if you go.

Auberge is higher end but in Carmel and very very good. You could always cab it to Marnius (excellent) or Pacific's Edge haven't had dinner there for about 5 years so I can't speak to that.
