Shipping fresh baked bread question?
I wanted to make a monkey bread or a banana bread and ship to someone as a gift. How long do you suppose the shelf-life is on something like this?
Any tips you have on this would be greatly appreciated.
I used to send a yeast bread (oatmeal and molasses, which stayed moist) by overnight or 2nd day mail and it wasn't a problem. If you're in the US and sending it anywhere in the adjacent 48, you should be in good shape, especially in this time of year. Overseas, no guarantees.
Homemade bread will only keep a few days before it begins to stale and develop mold & bacteria. if it takes those few days to get to your destination, you'll be wasting money unless it's to be consumed shortly after arrival. That said, certain types of bread will last longer, such as those with a higher sugar or sweetening or salt content. Also, the better you pack it (i.e. keeping air & light out) the longer it will last.

But there are many more artificial preservatives in use today, such as nitrates and nitrites found in meats. Home baked bread goes stale after 36 hours, and starts to develop mold within 4 days, but a loaf from the supermarket will keep for more than a week due to propionates which prevent mold.
