Ja Rock Jamaican Restaurant Toms River
Today I had a very nice lunch at Ja Rock Jamaican Restaurant in Toms River NJ....
didn't know what to expect......I walked in and was pleasantly surprised at the nice colorful decor, Lime & Lemon colored walls, pics of Bob Marley & Island scenes, white table clothes, natural wood floor and accents...service cheerful & informative, as I haven't eaten this type of cuisine only but a few times in the past....I noticed a display of beef patties so I decided to start with that as an appetizer...with a tall glass of their Homemade Lemonade.....after browsing the menu & asking a few questions about the cuisine I decided to order the Jerked Pork, w/ rice & peas, sweet plantains.......when it came out it looked delicious & smell great.....nice big thick slices of spiced Pork covered with onions, green, red peppers really delicious, & I wont lie it was smoking hot...I mean Scotch Bonnet/Habanero Hot as it should be...second bite brought sweat to my brow but the delicious spices made it all come together with a sip of the Lemonade, finished it off for desert with their Warmed Homemade RUM Cake, you can smell the Rum in the air its potent & super tasty.....they also have live Reggae entertainment and dancing on weekends also.....here's a few pics I took also....
nice addition to Toms River, NJ
The food is fantastic, but I really wish it would catch on with more people! My boyfriend and I feel awkward sometimes eating in there by ourselves. I think this place needs to do more to get the people of Toms River on board. I can't imagine many of them have had Jamaican food unless they've been to the island. That has to be intimidating to some. They need to do one of the booths during festivals so people can experience the deliciousness.
It's definitely a great place, much better than anything else in that particular strip mall. My coworkers and I went for lunch ourselves a while back and absolutely loved it. The best part was the owner urging us to have the beef patties while he was chowing down on one freshly out of the kitchen.
Beer - That's quite a statement about the other varied food offerings in that shopping center. While I admit that the food at JaRock is very good (please see my earlier posts about the restaurant), I don't think it is far and away that much better than say El Familiar or Athens Grill. I would even throw in the sit down Chinese restaurant (whose name evades me) as another decent restaurant in the plaza.
