Very good Sichuan entrees

We saw this restaurant, located in Pleasant Hill, reviewed on the program Check Please and were excited to try the food for ourselves. We ordered a few entrees, the Changsha Prawn Clay Pot, Roasted Garlic Fish Filet, Pork Pot Stickers, Shrimp Fried Rice, and Wonton Soup. We were first served a cabbage with spicy sauce and peanuts that got our tastebuds warmed up. The entrees did not disappoint, and were delicious, not too spicy. In fact, a little more spice would have been just fine. The soup however was a bit bland, the pot stickers were thicker than I am used to and very hearty. All portions were huge and everything on the menu is very good value. We had the leftovers for lunch the next day. I live in Walnut Creek and would say that the wide variety offered beats all of our Chinese restaurants by a mile. I look forward to going back and trying some of the other menu items. This restaurant is a hidden gem and you will not be disappointed.

  1. oh, but you must get the tea smoked duck!

    1. They;re on Restaurant.com also

      1. Cumin lamb (or beef) is probably a good bet.
You mentioned Pork Pot Stickers, Shrimp Fried Rice, and Wonton Soup. These are not going to be anything near traditional Sichuan food.
See how they do with green vegetables.
You also could try looking at the myriad threads on this board about China Village in Albany.
And here's a thread on SFH itself:

        1. I think Sichuan Fortune House is in a class with the other very good Sichuan restaurants in the Bay Area (China Village; Z&Y). Next time you go, ask your host to point you to traditional Sichuan dishes on the menu; he is extremely nice and helpful. I agree with Joel (above) that cumin lamb would be a good traditional order, as would twice-cooked pork, anything with lots of chili oil, and a spicy noodle dish like dan dan mien. If they have a sweet-vinegary wok-charred cabbage, try that too.

          1. For those keeping store, Sichuan Fortune House is at the former site of Lucky Dragon, which I believe was the venue for a Chowhound gathering at one time. I do keep score, with a list of hundreds of restaurants to try should I ever visit a particular locale, even if I have no idea if I'll ever reach that locale. Consequently when I rolled up expecting Lucky Dragon, I was apprehensive as I had my doubts that a replacement restaurant of a different regional ilk in this location would be authentic like the predecessor. Fortunately, Sichuan Fortune House passed the test, with a nice mixture of Chinese diners and the local lunch crowd. Fish with roasted garlic was quite good.

The occupant immediately before Sichuan Fortune House was a Malaysian restaurant. So it must have been some time since you last visited that locale.
