Steak and Egg might be a possibility, but it's a little north, in Tenleytown.

Steak and Egg, for sure. Not pretty, but always open and always good.

Anna Maria on Connecticut Avenue in Dupont Circle is open 24 hours, but the food isn't very good. Call first if you're interested, just in case they've changed.

They closed a while ago - and having bartended there, I don't recall them being open 24 hours - at least not during my tenure, thank goodness.

How late do you need, and are you wedded to breakfast?

'til about 1am would be best, if not later. The friend prefers breakfast, yes, but any good cheap eats (not Asian) would be ok too.

Now you're adding in "good" as a requirement; that stretch has late-night eats, but not a lot of good ones.
In Georgetown, I know Paolo's has a late-night pizza menu (I think $8 for a small pie) till around 1 or 2, and there's Quick Pita or George's Townhouse (cheesesteaks & middle eastern) till around 3 or 4. For cheap pizza, there's also Manny & Olga's and Pizza Movers further up Wisconsin, both of which are open till 4am or so and do OK pizza and not bad subs. If it's the weekend, Clyde's in Georgetown should be open till 1am.
Closer to Van Ness, I know Nanny O'Brien's is open that late, although I don't know how late their kitchen is open.
If he prefers breakfast, though, Open City is probably your best bet.

Since we're on Chowhound, I assume that "good" is a given! If I didn't care, I'd just search google for spots that are open late!!! ;) Thanks for the recs..........

Georgetown Cafe! This is my go to spot any night I'm out late in DC. Food is pretty decent. Breakfast and dinner options always available, American and Mediterranean food choices. Open 24/7.
