Compression Ice Cream Maker

  • 2

I am looking at the White Mountain 4quart with the motor, which is an ice and rock salt method to making....it gets very mixed reviews, but seems to make a better custard style ice cream than the gel canister models. Also, I don't like the fact that you have to chill the gel canister for a full day before hand on those models.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good compression style ice cream maker? Hoping to spend under $250, but anywhere in the range for a good product is acceptable. Thanks a lot!

  1. I have the Cuisinart. I bought it for my dad so it hasn't been used much since he died. It doesn't make a lot - like a pint and a half I think? or a quart and a half? Plenty for me since I don't have a sweet tooth. It takes up a lot of counter space but I only take it off the shelf when I'm using it, and I like that I don't have to prefreeze the bowls. There's no room for that sort of nonsense in the tiny top freezer compartment in this apartment.

    1. I have a Cuisinart ICE-50 which I bought refurbished off Woot.com for $139. It makes a batch of up to 1.5 quarts in about 40 minutes. It is pretty noisy but makes good ice cream! If you don't want to wait for it to come up on Woot again, TigerDirect.com also sells them for the same price but I'm not sure what they will charge for shipping.
