  1. Much of this info is already available in other posts, so you might want to try some searching (if you haven't already). But what the heck, I'll play:

    1) Thai: Khow Thai (Broadway and Arapahoe)
    2) Pizza: Pizzeria Basta (Arapahoe and 33rd) for neopolitan; Cosmo's (delivery/takeout) for NY style
    3) Sushi: Sushi Tora (10th and Pearl) for best fish; Sushi Zanmai (Spruce and 13th) for fun and still very good fish
    4) Burgers and Fries: Larkburger (Arapahoe and 28th)
    5) Fish and Chips (and/or general pub food): Southern Sun (Table Mesa and Broadway)
    6) Doughnuts: Good luck. It's a healthy town. Go to Denver for Krispy Kremes.
    7) Mexican: Agave (28th and Valmont) for upscale; Efrains (Arapahoe and 60th or so?) for authentic
    8) Central and/or South American: Aji (Pearl and 16th)
    9) Vietnamese: Chez Thuy (28th and Mapleton); if you want the real thing, though, try New Saigon (Federal in Denver)
    10) German, Viennese, and/or Central Eurpoean: Ummm... nope, don't know this one.
    11) Authentic Tacos (corn tortillas, meat, onion, cilantro): Centro (Pearl and 10th)
    12) Take-away Burritos: Illegal Pete's (on the Hill or Pearl and 15th)
    13) Beer: Southern Sun/Mountain Sun
    14) Coffee: I don't go out enough to know.
    15) Unusual sandwiches: Dish Gourmet (Pearl and 19th or so)
    16) **Best happy hour, in terms of low food and drink prices, as well as food quality**: the Mediterranean, also known as the Med (Spruce and 9th) - fabulous, cheap tapas during happy hour
    17) Any very favorite place that does not fit into one of the previous categories: The Kitchen and SALT (both on Pearl and 11th) are super local/eco friendly and have great atmospheres for a dinner out.

Thanks for playing. Restaurants, unfortunately, often close, while new ones open all the time, so I wanted the most recent information (despite some good info being present in earlier posts). Excellent suggestions- we will try them all.

    2. I've been pretty unhappy with the ethnic food scene in Boulder in general, so in some cases this is the best of bad options.

      1) Thai - the thai situation is particularly dire. Thai Kitchen (north Broadway, shopping center northwest of Violet) is the current front runner in my efforts to sample all the thai restaurants in the city. Dinner only, shares space with the North Boulder Cafe.

      8) Central and/or South American - Pupusas Sabor Hispano (Salvadoran), which has now moved to a larger space slightly further north on Broadway

      9) Vietnamese - don't bother with this in Boulder. Get in the car and drive to Broomfield, 120th and Main, where you get a choice of several good options for pho, groceries, and non-pho Vietnamese.

      17) Any very favorite place that does not fit into one of the previous categories
Hmm. The best of limited options for Chinese are: Zoe Ma Ma (Pearl St) for a limited selection of homestyle small plates; the "other" menu at Five Spice (Iris and 28th) for not-as-americanized lunch/dinner; and the weekend-morning-only Taiwanese small plates menu at Lee Yuan (Baseline and Foothills).

      1. 1) Thai - Khow Thai
        2) Pizza - Proto's for cracker-crust-thin pizza; Pizzeria Basta (Neopolitan-style); soon to come, a Frasca offspring
        3) Sushi - Hapa Sushi (contemporary); Sushi Tora (classic)
        4) Burgers and Fries - Rueben's Burger Bistro
        5) Fish and Chips (and/or general pub food) - Hungry Toad; Conor O'Neil's
        6) Doughnuts - ????
        7) Mexican - Agave when they're good, they're good, but I've been served near-raw chicken there (http://bit.ly/aCHIQd)
        8) Central and/or South American - Centro (downtown and hopping); Pupusa's (Ecuadorian; haven't been there since it upgraded from hole-in-the-wall
        9) Vietnamese - Kim's to go (popular w/ students; take out right near the CU campus
)10) German, Viennese, and/or Central Eurpoean - You have to leave Boulder; Andrea's in Lyons, Black Forest in Nederland, Cracovia in Westminster (or is it Broomfield?)
        11) Authentic Tacos (corn tortillas, meat, onion, cilantro)
        12) Take-away Burritos
        13) Beer - All sorts of brewpubs, cut I'm not much of a beer drinker, so I wouldn't know.
        14) Coffee - Ditto. Everyone has a fave, not necessarily only for the coffee but for the ambiance. Mine is Book End on the Pearl Street Mall, followed by Folsom Street Coffee.
        15) Unusual sandwiches - Snarf's (not necessarily unusual, but good)
        16) **Best happy hour, in terms of low food and drink prices, as well as food quality** - Alba Ristorante; Arugula Bar y Restaurante
        17) Any very favorite place that does not fit into one of the previous categories. Boulder has some extraordinary special-occasion restaurants: the Flagstaff House, Frasca Food & Wine; John's; Black Cat

        1. 2) Pizza- Jalino's Pizza.
          3) Sushi- Sushi Zanmai off Pearl. From what I've been told, the only Japanese-trained chef in Boulder. Japango has good happy hour specials, it's the best cheap sushi (oxymoron?)
          4) Burgers and fries- Dark Horse. Cheap, dirty, greasy, Delicious. IMO, a perfect burger joint. I for one can't understand the Larkburger. It feels like a coffeeshop or a Jamba Juice something. Very hipster but it is good food.
          5) Fish and Chips- The Pearl Street Pub, Conor's
          6) Doughnuts- lolwut
          9) Vietnamese- There's a new Pho spot on 28th and Pearl, but haven't tried it. looks OK. Only other one is a greasy drunk-food hut on the Hill, afaik.
          11) Authentic Tacos- Yep, Efrain's. Wish it wasn't so out of the way.
          12) Take-away Burritos- Illegal Petes! Awesome carnitas, what I always go for <$10. The one on the Hill has a nice upstairs bar that's never busy.
          13) Beer- Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery! Or a proper brewery. Avery's my favorite.
          14) Coffee- The Unseen Bean is a good one, roasted in Longmont. The Trident on Pearl is a classic. Lots of choices here.
          15) Unusual sandwiches- Half Fast Subs! Hands down the best (and most!) sandies in town. Get a Strong Island iced tea while you're there, and the chipotle potato salad is awesome while you're waiting on your meal.
          17) Any very favorite place that does not fit into one of the previous categories- Lucille's Creole Cafe off Pearl is a cute little spot in an old house that's great for a lunch date or delicious breakfast. Also Moe's Broadway Bagel. Get the Aurora breakfast burrito and never look back. And the Dushanbe Teahouse is a must, great for visitors.

          1. This thread has lots of info: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/679036

            1) Thai: most thai here is decent, none is great, IMO.
            2) Pizza: Cosmo's for delivery, lots of good "gourmet" pizzas at restaurants like Protos, basta, etc
            3) Sushi: Zanmai
            4) Burgers and Fries: smashburger
            5) Fish and Chips (and/or general pub food): Southern Sun, The Corner Bar
            6) Doughnuts: none
            7) Mexican: I have had great and bad meals at Agave. There is no great Mexican here, IMO.
            9) Vietnamese: Chez Thuy has good food and a huge menu, but I'm not an expert on this cuisine
            11) Authentic Tacos (corn tortillas, meat, onion, cilantro): Tahona?
            12) Take-away Burritos: Illegal Pete's
            13) Beer: Southern Sun, but we have some 8 or 9 breweries in town, so why not sample them all and decide? :-D
            15) Unusual sandwiches: I like Deli Zone sammiches
            17) Any very favorite place that does not fit into one of the previous categories: Lucile's is awesome for breakfast. The Buff is a good breakfast spot. Zolo for southwestern. Happy for interesting asian and good/expensive cocktails. Arugula.

I haven't had Tahona tacos in a long time, but I recall a Jason Sheehan Westword review of Tahona where he basically said the food was completely inedible and it was one of the worst restaurant experiences he'd ever had. FWIW.

And unfortunately, I think the Buff's breakfasts have taken a nosedive - last couple of times I was there it was pretty sub-par. There are so many other great breakfast places in town, though - Lucile's, Walnut Cafe and Walnut Southside, Dot's, Village Coffeeshop, Original Pancake House - that it's not too big a deal.

              1. re: monopod

LurkerDan - Tahona does open-face. soft tacos w/ various toppings. During happy hour, they are VERY well priced.

I had breakfast at the Buff 2 or 3 weeks ago and it was the same as it ever was.

                  1. re: LurkerDan

Good to know! Maybe I just caught them at a bad time.

                2. re: LurkerDan

I am quite happy to try all 8 or 9 breweries!!
