Chartres: great place for lunch?

As part of a January trip to Paris, we're planning a day trip via train to Chartres. After we visit the cathedral, is there a chowhound recommended place for lunch that we can reach on foot?

Thanks for your advice.

  1. La Vieille Maison is near the Cathedral, a bit overpriced, as is everything else in that vicinity. There is a superior restaurant on the river, but I don't know how convenient it would be relative to the train station.

    1. I'm afraid I cannot be terribly helpful; although over the years we've gone a fair amount to Chartres, we've tried most places around the Cathedral and not one strikes me as memorable. I'd be most interested in where you go and go it is.

Thanks John. We'll keep digging in Chartres.

Also, the link to your blog gave us great info re the David Hockney show and the recent opening of the Gagosian Gallery (Jean Prouve and Cy Twombly) . We plan to see both. Great stuff as our visit is oriented around art, food and walking around.

      2. I haven't been to Chartres in some years, but I have been to La Vieille Maison twice and unless it has gone terribly downhill it would be a fine choice, the atmosphere is particularly cozy and charming. I think I have been to the restaurant Oakglen refers to on the river, but I cannot remember the name. I only remember the food was excellent but the lighting was too bright.

Agreeing that La Vielle Maison is fine. We were there last year. It is not in the "meal to remember" category but the place is charming, the food is solid and the location is ideal.

We stumbled into it by instinct - going to Chartres was a last-minute decision from a tour of the Loire - and only realized after we started eating that all the diners around us had Rick Steves Guides. Even so, I would recommend it!
