Embrasse [Melbourne]

At the request of Mr_G:

I went to Embrasse with my gf and parents who were down from Sydney. I live walking distance away from Embrasse but had never been, as my girlfriend was really anti-Embrasse for some unknown reason. I don't think she liked the name or something but now, she is a definite fan. We all had a great meal, even my notoriously fussy father.

Nic Poeleart's cooking is fabulous. For dinner he offers a 5 or 9 course degustation or a la carte. I think we were all in a bit of an individualistic mood so we ordered a la carte. I went with applewood smoked and roasted sweat breads for entrée and lamb rack with soy milk for mains. Interesting combinations, quality ingredients, perfectly cooked without going over the top on gels, emulsions, foams, thermomix madness. The sweatbreads were served with a 64C egg yolk, black seeds and a tiny bit of wombok. They were simply the best sweatbreads I've had anywhere. The lamb with soy milk was really quite intersting. Perfectly cooked to medium rare and served with plumped up sultanas, asparagus and a very gentle and well matched soy milk sauce. The lamb had just the right amount of salt too. We ordered the special vegetable for the night which was an onion gratin with bechamel and walnuts… it was the perfect choice, especially with the lamb. The famous aligot is pretty damn good too!

Other dishes that were ordered included the fabulous looking Meli Melo salad, black squid ink john dory. Can't quite remember what my dad had.. but he was, unusually, very happy.

My dad and I split a cheese board for dessert. My mum ordered the chocolate mushrooms which looked and tasted delicious. The "apple egg" which my gf ordered was an extremely light soufflé with an apple centre - fabulous in appearance and taste.

We drank Sorrenberg Sauv Blanc Semillion, a Bella Ridge GSM and the Salomon Gelber Traminer 'Noble Reserve' for afters..

Oh and the Peanut Butter Macaroons were a great way to finish!!

All for the bargain price of $589. We will be going back again and again!!

Went to Embrasse for Sunday Lunch. At $62/head it's a pretty good 4 course deal.

Quinoa, spiced seeds, beans and ricotta salad
Chicken Terrine with cabbage and brioche
Roasted lamb loin with kale, swede, sweet potato
    Frangipane tart with summer fruits

Delicious and relaxed. Not as frou frou as his ala carte or degustation menu.

500ml carafes of reasonable wine for $19!

Embrasse really seems to have hit its stride - I must get there but have been spending all my money at Loam :-(

Slightly related, I went past Metropole the other day (buying croissants next door) and their menu is looking very different to first opening, but still looking a bit exxy for Sydney Road.
