Looking for something good, but does not have to be fancy or upscale. Suggestions appreciated.

Most of the good places are near, but not on, Civic Center Plaza.

*Ler Ros is a very good Thai place on Larkin Street, up a few blocks from the plaza.
*In that area, Larkin Street is known as Little Saigon, and has a number of Vietnamese and Thai spots; some people like Bodega Bistro, and Golden Turtle; also Burmese Kitchen which is worth a visit.
*Heaven's Dog is a Charles Pham place on Mission [btwn 7th and 8th]; I've eaten there twice, and liked it. It has a bar/lounge, as well as a dining room.
*On the other side of Van Ness is Hayes Street which is rich with restaurants, including Hayes Street Grill, Absinthe, Bar Jules, Paxti Pizza, and some other places that don't jump to mind at the moment.

I'm sure other hounds will insert their two cents, but that's mine.

ps: If you do a search of this board, you should come up with some previous threads on this subject.
