Need Herring in and around Sacramento

I recently started eating Herring and WOW. Now I buy pickled Herring any chance I get. I buy the pickled Herring and eat little at a time.
I found a few recipes for salted and pickled Herring and want to try them out. But low-n-behold, I cannot seem to find any body that sells fresh Herring here in Sacramento. I went to 7 asian stores, and they have tons of great fresh fish on ice but no Herring. One place, Seafood City had herring, but they were small 3-5 inches from head to toe. I need herring fillet to be around 6-9 inches at least. Fresh fillet are preferred, but if all I can get are frozen, then have to try those out. Reasonable prices please. And please no websites (possibly mystery fish) being shipped half-way around the world.
Any fish markets, and seafood markets, any outdoor fish/seafood markets that carry herring would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You All!

  1. try some of the Russian or European markets in West Sac. They are all over. Very Cool Stuff. I do believe I saw pickled herring at a small Rusian Grocery at the corner of Keagle Dr and Sacramento Ave. They may be able to get you some fresh or frozen.

Europa Mkt and Produce is at the SW corner of Harbor and W Capital. (Not what you're looking for, but they both have an outstanding deli counter with sausages from all over Eastern Europe.)

      1. I love herring too. Koreana on Olson Dr. had a nice selection. The herring is near the fresh meats.

If you like to travel I recommend visiting Amsterdam. There are several herring food stands throughout the city.
