I went to Scarpetta in NYC two years ago...soon after it got the NYT review...the food, with the exception of the polenta with mushrooms, was unmemorable...the heralded spagetti with tomato sauce tastes like the hazan recipe (onion/butter) with a few added basil leaves. The room was fun and had a terrific NYC vibe.
However, the Montage is a morgue....this addition won't change that, IMO...also, while $25 pastas may fly in NYC, I'm not sure about LA (although Madeo seems to do well).

re: 2ndAvenue
Had the tomato and basil pasta today and it was one of the most delicious pastas I have ever eaten. My guest agreed. As 2ndAvenue said: "It is simple, delicious, perfectly executed."
Of note: Scarpetta is not part of Dine LA Week and they were busy; albeit, not as busy as Bouchon, across the way, which is participating in DineLA. Moreover, I loved lunch so much that I booked a reservation for tomorrow night for dinner. This restaurant is a clear winner! Can't wait to try other dishes tomorrow night.-----

re: maudies5
that's one of the reasons i love the restaurant so much. it would be easy for them to just focus on the pasta and let everything else suffer, but they don't. the one weak area of the menu is dessert...but the flourless chocolate cake with burnt orange caramel gelato is superb.
oh, and skip the aged sirloin - we had a bad experience with it, and i read a couple of similar reports from other Hounds.

re: loblaw
Loved the New York version - though Conant was notably in the kitchen on my visit.
Fantastic bread service, beautiful and complex pastas, good portions for the dollar. I do not believe any of the Scarpetta restaurants have a tasting - at least they didn't when I last looked.
The SCIALATIELLI and DUCK & FOIE GRAS RAVIOLI are superb and I made the Polenta for Thanksgiving last year and it turned out great.
