Restaurant Recommendation near Union Station(?)

Will be in Toronto in early November and would really appreciate your recommendations for a restaurant near Union Station.

A colleague and I will be arriving in the early evening (not sure if we're flying in on Porter or taking the train) and staying somewhere downtown (thinking Novotel Toronto Centre). We don't mind a bit of a stroll.

Price is not a consideration. Think middle-of-the-road type NA or French fare would be most appreciated (Colleague is a bit fussy. Wouldn't chance ethnic; even Italian. Don't think he'd like the small plates). Looking for a more intimate place where we can find a secluded table and catch up a bit. Given we're travelling, I'd guess we'll be fairly "business casually" dressed (if that makes a difference). Was interested in Biff's but wondering if it's too open. Menu there would be fine.

Alas, no really exciting reason that I'm looking for an intimate, secluded table other than the fact that I am very hard of hearing and struggle in very busy, open places. Lighting can be dim and atmosphere relaxing, but no loud background music or crowds. We'd like to be sure it is a restaurant where we can make reservations (Wednesday night shouldn't be too much of an issue I hope) and if there's a particular area of a particular restaurant that can be recommended, then all the better.

Thank you in advance for your kind assistance with this very specific request.

Nota Bene sounds about right. Despite the Italian name, it's more contemporary and a popular business spot. Certainly not loud! George or Canoe would also work.

I'd have to respectfully disagree. Every time I've been to Nota Bene, the noise level has been so high I could barely hear what my dining companion was saying!

How about Far Niente or Reds Bistro? Both are within walking distance of Union. While they are somewhat larger venues, I'm sure they could fit you into a more intimate nook upon request.

Nota Bene has been loud whenever I have dined there in the evening.

Forte (ironically) is quieter, not nearly as bustling as Nota Bene, and has a relaxing atmosphere.

Tundra in the Hilton also might be a good option for a quiet dinner.

Biff's should be open, and it is a short walk from the Station. It hasn't been too loud when I've dined there, but Forte was somewhat quieter.

Biff's would be a suitable choice but I prefer Le Select for a good comfy French bistro with, good food and service and a great wine list. I think if you request a booth the noise level would be ok.

Thanks to you both for the suggestions.

I thought of Le Select (my sister's wedding reception was there 3 years ago and it was lovely) but I had heard it has slipped badly of late(?) (rude service and marginal food, I've been told) Could I bother you to ask, JennaBean, if you've been lately?

Again, appreciate any and all advice.

I was there with a group of eight about a month ago and have lovely service and a very good meal - my salad could have used more seasoning but that's about the only complaint on the food. I think all of the folks I had the pleasure of dining with would say they had a good meal and service that evening.
