Harvard Sq Dinner Recs

I couldn't find any recent posts for recs in Harvard Sq. We're looking for moderately priced dining suggestions. Heading out toward Porter Sq recs would be helpful as well. I've only eaten at the Thai restaurant in Porter Sq, can't recall the name. I know about Le's, The Border Cafe, Grendel's Den, Bartley's. We need to expand our repetoire, and appreciate your assistance!

  1. I like the Red House, just off the square on winthrop.

    1. Try Russell House Tavern on JFK St.

We went to the Russell House Tavern, and were v. pleased. We shared the leaf salad and the 20oz ribeye. The kitchen split both dishes for us. Everything was delicious. We sat downstairs, and it was quiet enough for my dc. In fact, I would recommend this place on the thread where to eat steak that isn't a steakhouse.
Thank you to everyone for all the great recs. We're planning to try the Red House next! Brasserie Jo is so on my list, because I'm a lover of mussels.

      2. For high end Italian, I really like Rialto and had their 70 dollar ligurian tasting meal last week. I also recommend Tamarind Bay, that is located in a Basement off JFK, which has in my opinion the best Indian food in Boston - as good as the best in NYC that i have had. Sandrine's makes ok Alstatian food but I prefer Brasserie Jo - or for that matter the Everest Room in Chicago - owned by John Joho. I frequently get a quick salad at Broadway market which is located a few blocks away from the square.

        1. Towards Porter Square I would recommend Chez Henri for French/Cuban fusion, Zoe's for Chinese, and R.F. O'Sullivans for burgers. In Harvard Square itself, my two favorites are probably Bartley's and Cambridge 1. On the upscale end Harvest is my pick. Russel House Tavern is not perfect, but they have an excellent menu with inconsistent execution. Casablanca and Cafe Algiers are nice for a light bite. Cafe Pamplona has an expanded menu now, that has impressed me. La Creperie/Arrow Street Crepes is another alternative that is quite good.

          1. When that Bon Chon (Korean Fried) Chicken opens up, that should be a destination spot!

So, I really like Shay's, at the bottom o f JFK Street. Homey, only beer and wine, great burger, interesting basic menu, really can't go wrong, very casual!

I have still got to go to Shay's! I've wanted to go there but just haven't yet.
