Ethnic food in London or Oxford

Piggy Smalls Oct 23, 2010 05:13 PM

Hi All,

I'm in Oxford for school but travel to London fairly frequently. Been absolutely dying for a decent meal here since I arrived - most of my dining out experiences have been disappointing here so far.

I'm looking for any recommendations on the following in either Oxford or London:

sushi - reasonable price/quality. NOT the Yo Sushi type of chains.
steak - anything decent. I tried rump steak a few weeks ago...that was a pretty big mistake.
Korean food - looking for Korean bbq, tofu soup, bim bim bap, etc.
Vietnamese food - looking for pho, Vietnamese subs, rice dishes, etc.
bbq ribs - any American style bbq would do.

Any tips would be appreciated. I'm sort of reaching my limit fish and chips, steak pot pie, and burgers here...not sure if I can last much longer. Thanks!

have you done a search piggy? using "oxford" or the types of food you're in search of should throw up lots of options as they are all discussed quite frequently.

Try Bodeans in London for pretty good BBQ ribs, sandwiches etc. They have a few locations, but I've only been to the one in Soho. It's difficult finding a steak you'll think of as 'American,' in London. Unless the restaurant imports beef (and some do), the British versions don't taste or look the same.

Do search using the engine for lots of good ideas about sushi, Vietnamese etc.

Sushi - Tomoe. Or you can search Oonth and Limster posts for potential updates to the Japanese scene.
          Steak - I dunno.
Korean - Search for any number of "New Malden" posts.
Vietnamese - Chung Viet in Deptford hands down. The Vietnamese places around Deptford in general really put their dolled up cousins in Shoreditch to shame.
          BBQ - Not a clue.

Thanks a lot guys - I'll try to run some more searches on the board, but I think these are enough to get me ready for a weekend trip into London!

Regarding steak, I've heard good things about Goodman in Mayfair. However, I'm still concerned maybe it's not "American" enough for my taste? I've heard great things about them though and would like to give them a try. Although I'd feel kinda guilty if I paid GBP100 and the meal turned out disappointing...

Perhaps the Palm will fit the bill. It is an american steak house with beef imported from the US.

Order something juicy like a rib-eye and the difference between the British/NA beef is negligible.

I haven't tried it yet, but there is a new American steakhouse at the Marriot which is supposed to be quite American -- heard mixed reviews online. I've always enjoyed steaks at Goucho which isn't a chowhound-esque place but definitely satisfies the craving,

Best sushi: Edamame on Holywell St. in Oxford, near New College. Tiny place, but great quality. They only serve sushi on Thursday nights, 5 to 8:30, and they'll also do takeout if you call ahead.

They're also open for lunch Wed-Sun and dinner on Fri and Sat, with a small but great non-sushi menu.
