Anniversary Dinner in NYC: Marea, A Voce, Corton, or Aldea?
Hi everyone,
We lived in NYC for four years--four years ago! Now we're San Francisco foodies and we're headed back for our second wedding anniversary.
I'd love to eat somewhere new and exciting in the city. Which do you think is the best choice?
Marea, A Voce, Corton, or Aldea? Or something else entirely? We eat everything.
Thank you!!
Alison

def Marea or Corton, however they are very different, Corton is very modern cuisine and some of it is unusual. Marea is just incredible seafood and seafood pastas from Michael White.

Of the four mentioned, I have been to A Voce, Corton and Aldea. Have not been to Marea, but have heard good things about it. I think Corton is one of best restaurants in NYC right now, food was excellent and the 3 course prix fixe includes an incredible amount of amuses. I was just there last night and the Wagyu beef had to be one of best things I have eaten in the past 12 months.
I would also add Gilt into the list, the room is absolutely gorgeous and the food/service was one of the best I have had in the City. A bit on the pricey side though, but well worth the cost in my opinion.

Great food, a little overpriced, very uncomfortable chairs, far too low for the tables. Very confused waitstaff with an inordinate number of them milling about aimlessly, without any clear idea of which ones were assigned to our tabel. Would skip a return visit, despite the great pasta dishes and appetizers and desserts.

Of the four, I would pick Corton. Beautiful dining room, beautiful food, beautiful service. Second choice of the four would be Marea (although, personally I think it's a bit big and maybe a little noisy to be considered a "special occassion" restaurant). But the food and the service is very good.

Among the four I would choose Marea or Aldea. l have not tried A Voce, having read mixed reports on the food and that it is noisy. I found Corton underwhelming and overpriced, and did not care for the ambience, though a number of others on this board love it. I would add SHO and Oceana to your places to consider. We have had some spectacular meals at SHO, and I don't think I've had better seafood anywhere than at Oceana (their vegetables and desserts are top-notch too).

I agree with dropping A Voce completely from the list and adding SHO. I haven't been to some of the others, but I went to Corton for the first time last night, and it's definitely worthy of a special occasion. We both loved the decor, and the food is very inventive, but it's also a bit overwhelming and very expensive so just keep that in mind. Personally, I would also add Eleven Madison Park which is really very special, particularly if you get the 11-course tasting menu which is inventive and wonderful, plus the service is top-notch.

Of those four, I've only been to A Voce, which I wouldn't recommend for an anniversary. The food's pretty good (and pretty salty, and pretty overpriced), but the chairs are horrible. They're giant office-type rolling chairs. Some people get annoyed by noisy restaurants. I hate uncomfortable chairs.
