Another EMP or Per se, with a twist: Lunch at EMP or a rushed Dinner at Per Se ?

Next month My brother and I have an 10 hour layover in NYC.
We figured lets scratch a restaurant off our list.

That being said our flight is at 900 out of JFK, we will be in town on a Monday and Per Se is not open for lunch on Mondays.
I was able to secure a 530 reservation and they said dinner usually takes 3 hours but they can make it happen in 2 hours.
We live in Los Angeles and will eventually make the trek to french laundry if that should affect our decision.

So essentially I would love to hear fellow hounds opinions of whether we should go for the rushed meal at Per Se, or have a leisurely lunch at EMP and just make sure sometime in the future we trek north to French Laundry.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Even if it's possible for Per Se to rush their service, I would not suggest it. I think a leisurely lunch is a better idea. EMP is a perfect place for this.

I would absolutely do a leisurely lunch at EMP over a rushed dinner at Per Se. My last '3 hour dinner crammed into 2 hours' was not enjoyable. Per Se is more of a 3 1/2 - 4 hour meal from my experience.

Lunch is actually my go-to for EMP - the dining room is one of if not the most beautiful in NYC during the day.

Moreover, it'd seem to me this would fit in more favorably to your itinerary. A nice lunch at EMP + maybe a bite before flying appeals to me much more than a rushed dinner at Per Se + probably not much for lunch.

Going the other way, your one loss is of course the opportunity cost of passing on a Per Se reservation. But as you mention, it's well within your intentions already to make it to TFL.

I did an extended tasting at Per Se - it took 5.5 hours and was worth every cent and minute - it is not a meal to be rushed.

EMP is the sort of place where the lunch is just as good as the dinner. Similar could be said for Le Bernardin or Jean Georges as you can add courses for extra at either.

I've never been to EMP, but I have to say, I would not recommend rushing through Per Se. The two times i was there, dinner took nearly four hours and was perfectly paced. Go to EMP and save Per Se for next trip (or go to TFL).

I'd just like to note that TFL and Per Se are very different experiences, also. Do TFL when you are back in Cali.

Do Per Se when you have more time in New York. :-)

Everyone else has done the dining aspect. I'll do the math.

You have to be back at JFK by 8 to go through security. I'm conservative so I allow 90 minutes from Manhattan to JFK but even an hour is going to stretch you. Do you really want to do Per Se in 60 to 90 minutes?

Agreed. I'd want to be in a cab on my way to JFK by 7pm at the latest for a 9pm flight. I don't think you can really do a meal like that in 1.5 hours.

Definitely a leisurely lunch at EMP over being rushed at Per Se - it's just not worth it to rush at Per Se - you miss so much of the experience.

                  Thanks everybody,
Ill save Per Se for next time.
                  Lunch at EMP it is.

p.s. Oliver, we were gonna chance missing the flight and leave at 730 for JFK. We wont have baggage to check. But either way now I am thinking Per Se is not something we shuold rush.
