vijays, kilburn

just a little nod to a place that i'm sure needs no further promotion among those in the know... but look, my husband and i went to vijays in kilburn before a show at the Tricycle theatre the other night, and it was really *excellent*. surely the best and best--value keralan menu we've had anywhere in this country. (i haven't tried quilion yet, but that's another price category entirely...).

anyway, we split a perfect masala dosa to start. to those who don't get the point of masala dosa (which sometimes end up being a cynical excuse to move out the potato stash): eat this one. the rice flour pancake was crispy and delicate with just a little sweet buttery richness to the batter. amount of filling perfect, not overstuffed. filling itself delicious. whoa.

then we had: keralan lamb fry; cabbage and carrot thoran; spinach dhal; pilau. tho' the portions were quite generous, we could easily have eaten another dish, because it was all just so darn light and refined and good. unbe*lievably flavourful lamb in a distinctive masala paste. perfect dhal with loads of spinach, no excess grease, w/ visible curry leaves and other spices in proportion. best thoran i've ever had.

just incredibly well-judged and knowledgeable cooking. and the staff were so nice, too! what a nice meal; can't wait to go back to start working through all their seafood.

cheers! -e

  1. Really like this place but haven't been there in ages. I usually always eat vegetarian there even though I am a meat eater as their spicing is incredible. Agree about the dosas.
