Casual place for a first date?
Will be meeting a foodie for a date, but I want to keep things low-key and inexpensive. Any suggestions?

Is there an area of the city you prefer? Insomnia (Bloor and Bathurst) has a low-key, yet sophisticated vibe. The food's above average for the price.

Some places that come to mind:
The Hoof Cafe
Weezie's
Simple Bistro
Rosedale Diner
Not sure how inexpensive you want to be... Lower cost and I'd be tossing out Manpuku as a choice...

Can we have more info Merlot? Insomnia skews quite young, IMHO... if you're past early thirties I would not recommend.

Weezies is a good choice. The food is good, cozy room with casual service, prices are reasonable. Getting there will be your only issue as it is a little out of the way.

I went on a few 'first dates' at the Rushton. How about Giancarlo wine bar?

Sharing food helps keep the conversation moving, rather then having your face buried in your own dish. On that note, I recommend Sukhothai or the Black Hoof.

It depends on how young and hip you want to be, as well as what part of the city is neutral territory. In the central parts, I would either suggest 93 Harbord (Moroccan fusion) or Torito, both of which will likely let you out with a couple of glasses of wine and two courses for well under $150.00 . Both also fairly hip, with 93 having more space between tables and less hustle.
As for some of the other suggestions, Simple's evening menu might put you closer to the $200 mark, and the tables are closer together. The Rosedale Diner might be a bit too closely tabled for a good conversation.
