Italian bakery for bread
Good rolls for Italian beef shouldn't be hard to find.
D'Amato's is an Italian bakery on West Grand Ave that makes excellent bread. D'Amato's is also sold in a lot of smaller grocery stores. I think Treasure Island carries their bread. I would also try Southport Grocery for good Italian rolls or Olivia's Market on Waubansia.
Red Hen makes wonderful bread, Italian and otherwise. They provide bread to a lot of local restaurants. They're on Milwaukee Ave, just west of Damen.
I'll second the recommendation for D'Amato's. When I google, I get two addresses, 1124 West Grand and 1332 West Grand. I went to the 1124 address a few years ago and it was across the street from May Street Market (a notable contemporary American restaurant) and a block from the home location of Terry's Toffee. I don't know if they're still they're or if maybe they've moved a few blocks west or what the story is.
Another place that carries D'Amato's bread is Market Place on Oakton in Skokie.
There were three D'Amato's bakeries. The original with a coal-fired oven is at 1124 West Grand. Across Grand is Victor D'Amato's, which is the wholesale bakery that supplies a lot of restaurants and smaller grocery stores. The retail operation was at least temporarily moved into a corner of the wholesale operation while the store was being renovated. I do not know whether the renovation is complete.
Another brother, Frank, had the bakery 1332 West Grand, but I believe that it closed earlier this year.
Frank used to supply Treasure Island. Now they carry Victor's bread although TI has been cutting outside bread suppliers and may not carry the rolls. In any case the store at 3460 North Broadway is in Lakeview.
HarvesTime Foods in Lincoln Square carries both D'Amato and Labriola breads and usually has rolls suitable for sandwiches from both bakeries. They have a small parking lot and are an easy walk from the Rockwell Brown Line station.
