Where can I purchase a spice cake or square with chocolate icing on it?

  • 8

Years ago, I remember my mom purchasing spice cake squares that had a semi-hard chocolate icing on them from a bakery that used to be in Westfield. Several years ago, one of my sister's student's parents brought in a spice cake with chocolate icing for her child's birthday . She said the cake tasted like the old spice cake squares. The woman said it came from a bakery in Elizabeth. Does anyone know where I can purchase a good tasting spice cake or bar that has chocolate icing on it?

  1. There's a recipe in "Farm Journal's Country Cookbook" with mocha frosting. http://tinyurl.com/33av2dr

Look at your man. Now back to me. Now back to your man. Sadly, he isn't me.

Varelmann's in Rutherford used to carry a great spice cake. Call them to see if they still make it.

This thread may be 2 years old, but I found it just two days ago and so I called Varrelmann's to see if they still made spice cake. They do, and from scratch, not a mix! I placed an order yesterday and they had it for me today. It was delicious, tastes just like my mother-in-law and I remember them. We live in central NJ and it was well worth the trip. And their coffee cake is yummy, too.

      2. Do you have a good Polish bakery nearby? Spice cake with chocolate is a combination that I first encountered at Polish bakeries in Greenpoint (Brooklyn).

I don't have a Polish bakery nearby. I will have to Google to find a few that hopefully are not too far away. I will give them a call. Hopefull one will have the wonderful combination of spice cake and chocolate. The recipe that another person who responded to my inquiry mentioned in the "Farm Journal's Country Cookbook" sounds pretty good.

I got some spice cupcakes with chocolate frosting at B&W Bakery on Main St. in Hackensack about 2 weeks ago, and they were really good. I couldn't say if they were a regular item or not, but it wouldn't hurt to call.
