Holiday Specialty Items - Bison Prime Rib
The holidays seem to be screeching around the corner, I'm already seeing stores like Trader Joe's and Costco stocking specialty items that they only carry through the season. Yesterday I spied Bison Prime Rib at Costco. Has anyone bought this product? What once-a-year items do you anticipate each year?

A good source for commodity meat not typically carried at Vons et al is the Thuan Phat Vietnamese supermarket on Linda Vista. Good stuff for holiday cooking. Nijiya it is not, but:
Squab, cornish hens
excellent duck
Maine lobster for $7.99 per lb. and other fresh seafood
Whole beef loins for around $25
"Brown" chickens (head-and-feet-attached suprise before I threw it into the pot to make pho broth the other day)- $5 and SUPERB for making stocks
big bag 'o beef bones for almost nothing for your bouillion...and a lot of other goodies all from a butcher counter that is much cleaner than the one at Ranch 99, and never a crowd.
Cheers.

First, I'm off to Costco. Bison is all grass fed (josh!) and deeelicious.
I'll let you know- but it might be a few weeks. Ms Name is on a travel streak, so I just eat cheap stuff.

re: Fake Name
Morena. The Prime Rib is in the "specialty meat" (mostly frozen) section with other "holiday" types of indulgences, the Rib Eyes were cryovac type packaging in the "fresh" but pre-packaged meat section - close to whole prosciuttos (not the long, fresh, Costco packaged meats along the back wall). Both are same label/supplier.

I ALWAYS buy and cook a prime-grade standing rib roast from Costco every year for Christmas dinner. It has become a family tradition (along with homemade mashed potatoes, home-baked bread, etc.) -- one that I sadly will have to forgo this year because I swore off eating mammals six months ago. Fortunately, my family will still be able to partake, though it will be wild salmon for me (once again, from Costco) this year.
