South Tampa - Monstah Lobstah, Restaurant BT

the_sneeb Oct 21, 2010 01:51 PM

I moved out of Tampa a few years back... but visit family a few times a year. Last time I visited both these restaurants seemed to be in dire straits. I never see any love for either of these places on this board, I hope people are keeping them afloat!

Don't rob me of my yearly lobster roll!!!

Sorry, sneeb: BT closed about a month ago. She said the landlords wouldn't work with her; my own opinion is the place was heading downhill for a long time. She says she'll reopen a pared-down version somewhere nearby.

I think Monstah Lobstah is still on Bay to Bay, but I generally avoid eating lobster, so I hope someone else can give the definitive answer.

I'm sorry one of your faves is gone! There may be some new places around you'd like...

Earlier this year, I was over at Monstah Lobster in Tampa with my sister and her husband. It did not impress me at all. But the location we were at was at 1531 S. Dale Mabry. And that is what their website shows also.

agree with ribdog 100%. Monstah Lobstah makes me wonder what got the original ownah excited to open a restaurant to begin with.

Well, the link on this very page, on the left, lists 3409 W. Bay to Bay as their address. I thought they moved from the Dale Mabry address well over a year ago, to the plaza that houses Starbucks on Bay to Bay. Near Estrella?

Yeah I remember seeing that, over near Cappy's. is that an old location or an additional location? Either way the one on Dale Mabry was so forgettable that I forgot about it until I saw this thread.

BT on the other hand I often enjoyed, I loved the concept of their bar menu, I liked the salmon & soba noodles, I liked their Pho & Vermicelli (at times even better than Pho Quyen!), I really thought that was a decent place when they had their game together. My first experience was a bad one but subsequent visits made me love the place. I understand she's opening up shop across from Datz now? Is MacDill & Bay to Bay going to be the new Restaurant Row? That'd be great, I'm pretty sick of Howard (aka Jersey Shore)

Well, I just checked with my sister and confirmed that we were there in June of this year at S. Dale Mabry location. If it has moved by then, so be it. But it was there in June '10

Oh no. BT was so good. Too bad she couldn't work it out w/ the landlord.

Without boring everyone to death.. typically the Bankruptcy (chapt. 11) process gives you options for working with leases. Too bad they couldn't get it done.

There was an article in the St. Pete Times last spring in which she said that while she'd never missed a rent payment, she was struggling, and had contacted the landlord for help. She said it's common in the restaurant business for landlords to adjust rent during slow periods; anyway, she never even heard back. That may just be her side of the story, but on the other hand, Hyde Park Village seems so poorly managed by its current owners, it wouldn't surprise me if it's true. I'm sure BT suffered from being at the end of a block made dark by multiple vacancies. Now it's even worse, and Bailey's has moved, too...

Where'd Bailey's go? Hyde park used to be such a great spot :(

Kim Bailey is moving his operation to the old Chez Bryce location on Davis. He said he'd start slow, but full bar, breakfast/brunch and lunch, plus dinner more than a few times a week, are all in the offing. We're happy for him, and looking forward to the expanded menu(s), but we sure will miss just strolling over...

I agree Hyde Park's management is a disaster. Shame. It could be and used to be really great. They are shooting themselves in the foot.

I went with my fiance to BT the weekend before Valentine's day at their new location on MacDill, which is about a block north of Datz and in what used to be a restaurant supply store. If you don't know where it is, it is very easy to blow right by, as parking is in the back.

The food was fantastic as always. Beautifully presented, especially the roast duck pancake, and damn tasty.

I had the Cobia special with sun dried tomatoes and truffles which was great. My only qualm is that there was a sid eof saffron "risotto", which was just safron stick rice. While not what was advertised, it added a very nice layer of depth to the other flavors.

The finance had the lobster over noodles with shrimp powder. The lobster was very god, but lobster is lobster, and the noodles were outstanding. As an Italian who regularlly makes his own, the linguine was fantastic, fresh and perfectly cooked.

As for the new layout, it is a bit off at first, as it is now a much small space and with much lower ceilings. Sitting at the bar, you will notice this the most, but once moved to a table, you barely notice. Additionally, there is outdoor seating, which you have to walk through the kitchen to get to, which I always enjoy.

Also, the chef was a regular presence in the dining room, checking up to make sure that everything was going well. A very nice touch.

Although its pricey, the portions are big enough to split, and I will work this into my heavy rotation along with Pane Rustica.

interesting that you refer to your fiance as your "finance". freudian slip? lol, you wouldn't happen to be my ex-husband, would you?

DEVO, I'm with you, it's great, but bring your wallet. I still think the Bahn Mi is better at Saigon Deli (and 25% of the price too), but I love the Salmon with Soba noodles, and the spicy squid salad at BT.

Thanks for the review. Would love to try it and even enjoyed the recent review in the paper. I guess it was the fact that $30 for a duck breast kind of turned me off. Seriously, a little place on MacDill has prices comparable to the Slanted Door. But hey, when in South Tampa, right? It's on the list of places I need to go.

And if anyone knows the owner, would you please mention to her that her website is tough to navigate? Or perhaps it is all part of the show?

                      Kevin,

I know her, I was actually going to mention that to her last time I was there but I forgot, those little dots that (excruciatingly) slowly turn into words need to go. stat.
