Another Cave à Manger

  • 4

This weeks edition of l'Express had a special, featuring spots in the 9th and 10th arrondissements. So many of them in my immediate neighborhood were spot on, such as Patisserie Seurre, Boulangerie Landemaine, Les Papilles Gourmandes, Le Ferme St. Hubert, that I decided to try a featured ,small, cozy bistro/wine bar that we have walked by several times, "Le Rouge et Le Verre".

What a pleasant find; the patron is very friendly, even though the place fills up quickly and he has the service all alone. There are rows and rows of wines lining the walls, a small roaring fireplace, hams and sausages hanging on the walls and a few epicerie type items, à la "Les Papilles". The menu is €16.50 for 3 courses! And unlike "Les Papilles" there were about 4 choices, plus there is no corkage fee for the wine...same good price as take away. The cooking is perhaps not as refined as Les P. but it is good and satisfying. Today We had split pea soup with slices of morteau sausage, then a nice slice of roasted veal breast served with yummy gratin dauphinois and Provençale tomatoes, Ms. L had a salad of fresh fruits for dessert and I opted instead for a cheese selection. The bottle of Gevrey-Chambertin he recommended was fine and a few Euros less than what I had asked him about in the Burgundy section.

A pleasant experience: 8 Rue Maubeuge(not 58 as stated in l'Express).

I tried to write you a few times but all our emails were bounced back.

My cousin and her husband who took a rental in the 'hood last summer loved the place and adopted it as their pub. Indeed nice food nice wines. Very friendly people.
