Horton Plaza - Anything Chow Worthy In or Around?

Gypsy Jan Oct 17, 2010 05:52 PM

I want to spent some time exploring Jon Jerde's palace in the coming days and would like to plan the exploration part around some nice meals.

Help is welcomed. Anyone?

Sure, plenty. I'd start across Broadway at the Grant Grill. Then there is Currant, and the Chowhound darlings Cowboy star and Cafe Chloe several blocks east.

[edit] I'd better mention Dobsons for mussel bisque served in a bread bowl (just like Boudin!) before BC has a conniption.

Thank You! But, is there anything from Germany? ("Just being playful.", she says in a very low voice.)

Well, I certainly don't want to open up a controversy here, but how about ordering choucroute at Chloe's. It's Alsatian, so if you're German, it's a German dish, if you're French it's not!!!

Choucroute itself is just the translation for sauerkraut. Choucroute garnie is a typical French/Alsatian dish. German versions are quite different, different types of sausages etc.

Just to be silly; I do have an Alsatian dish in my kitchen - but he he weighs in at over one hundred pounds and it is all muscle. I don't think he would taste very good and he would certainly be very chewy.

        Good list.

O'Brothers burgers is inside Horton and is a decent addition to the san diego burger mania.

Yelp says that O'Brothers inside Horton is closed.

The fab mussel bisque is NOT served in a bread bowl...it's served 'en croute'
          Did Dobson's turn into a Marie Callenders when I wasn't looking? ; )

Gypsy Jan..Dobson's is a lovely place to dine in the bar is where I usually end up with a couple glasses of wine, bread and the mussel bisque with a splash of sherry.
They also make one hell of a burger too.
          Other great spots are:
          Jsix
          Grant Grill
          Westgate Le Fointainebleau
          Cafe Chloe in East Village

Sunday Brunch is excellent and the Westgate for breakfast/lunch or dinner are quite good too..they have an excellent seafood chowder with a cobb salad that is solid.
My attorneys swear by the $10 entree special at the Gourmet deli on the third level that includes soup/salad and they make a killer deli sandwich too.
I love that it doesn't get the hype but still delivers.

                Good tip on the deli.

I have had drinks at the hotel, but was always a little leery about eating there because it seems so empty.

Mussel Bisque? H-to-the-Y! It isn't German, but it is close enough to curl my toes!

Saw Tommy last Sunday at the Lyceum. I really liked it by the way, if you have not seen it before, you should. But the freaking parking at that mall is terrible. We got there a half hour before the play started. We stopped by Nordys and made a purchase and we got our ticket validated. Walked over to the theatre and the ticket taker told us the stores only validate for 3 hours while they validated for 4. So we re-validated our ticket. we saw the play and we were thinking about just grabbing something up at Panda Inn, but with time running short we left without eating. When we were exiting the lot, we were told that only the first validation worked you can't re-validate. we showed our ticket stub, and the attendant let us go. I know missing out on Panda Inn is NO big deal. My wife does have some sentimental attachment to the chain however. If any restaurant is going to make a go of it, then they really are going to have to change the parking policies or else no movie or theatre goers are going to have a pre or post show meal there.

I like BICE - San Diego for Italian, Donovan's Prime Seafood and Donovan's Steakhouse (yes better than Cowboy Star or Dobson's, both of which aere good), La Puerta for tequila and the Hopping Pig for Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap so everyone knows I am a hipster.
