Root Vegetables in Los Angeles

Yesterday I decided to make a recipe I found on Epicurious, "Pot Roast with Winter Vegetables".

The dish came out great and I would like to make it again especially as the weather gets colder. But the root vegetables were not available in the grocery stores.

I used celery root, rutabaga, parsnips, carrots and red potato. Obviously the last two are widely available but the first three required driving around. Eventually, I did find the celery root, parsnips and rutabaga at Gelsons.

The celery root is probably not a "winter vegetable" which might explain it's tiny size. David Lebovitz talks about using a 3 pound bulb in his soup but mine was pretty small, but delicious. I have always loved parsnips but got to try a rutabaga and it was truly wonderful. I was surprised to learn it is actually a cruciferous vegetable! I'm going to try a rutabaga gratin as soon as possible.

Does anyone know of a reliable source for root vegetables in LA? Either a farmers market or grocer?

  1. Ethnic markets.

Just about every Chinese grocery store (99, Hawaii, Arcadia, etc.) will carry a variety of root vegetables from the more common things like lotus root, arrowroot and Ube to more exotic things like "huái shān" (or Chinese mountain yams) and Burdock root.

    Good luck.

I just wondered if they carried non-Asian exotic root veggies.

I'm fairly familiar with Asian markets but don't remember them having a stock of veggies like rutabaga and celeriac ... yet they do have exotic veggies.

          Any farmer's markets?

I've definitely seen celery root, rutabaga not so much. Lots of turnips, however.

            I don't shop at Farmer's Markets. Sorry.
