sleepoveroverture Oct 15, 2010 12:24 PM

Hey everyone, this is my first post on chowhound and I'm excited about joining this community. I have been on a burger kick lately and I crave them 24/7. Im looking for suggestions on where I can locate the best burger in town. I live in Gilbert, but I'm willing to travel to get my hands on a killer burger. Any suggestions from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Welcome to you. You might search the archives for ideas. This topic has been covered extensively, but, new options seem to pop up all the time.

Burgers are a bit of a special occasion for me. I don't eat a lot of beef, and prefer to have it medium-rare or rare, so, that excludes most burger joints. At the moment, I am back to getting mine at Delux Burger. It's been an old standby for me.

I tried The Grind several times, but, I've given up on them. They can't cook a burger to my specifications more than half the time. It's too bad, because the burgers are good when cooked correctly.

I've tried to find out about the beef used by some of the moderate - higher end places like Zinburger and Bueno Burger, and I haven't received favorable responses.

I'd like to look into some of the "burger bar" concepts I've heard about. I think Don and Charlies and J&G Steakhouse are trying this.

I just experienced the (apparently common?) phenomenon of having a burger cooked to the wrong temp at The Grind. My "medium" burger came out somewhere in the territory between medium- well and well-done. Too bad, because I could imagine the overall package being pretty tasty if it were not surrounding an overcooked core. Also, I found the sheer verticality of the of the burger to be a bit offputting. I'm not averse to squashing a sandwich to fit it into my mouth, but this burger would have required a bar clamp to render it manageable for my possibly undersized mouth.

      Here's my list of Goto's

Maizies- $3 burgers on Monday with fries. Outstanding and CHEAP
Metro- One of my top 2 favorites
The Grind- I enjoyed the sweet and spicy burger alot

Start with those 3 places and let me know your thoughts. I order mine medium rare.

      Enjoy

when the outdoor grills are going at AJ's they have some very tasty fresh burgers.
I'd also recommend the burgers at Lobby's slightly north of southern and McClintock. Tempe.

For an inexpensive fast-food type of burger, I like Two Hippies.

For higher-end, I still think Delux is best.

I really like Two Hippies, too. The olive burger at Melrose is so delish. I always get it w/ the fresh salad of the day.

I've always found Delux over-rated, but will admit it's been a long time since I've been.

Since you're already on the east side, Joe's Farm Grill does a pretty good burger (if they don't overcook it; can be a little inconsistent).

Chelsea's Kitchen @ 40th St. & Camelback isn't bad (their veggie burger is decent too). And altho' Houston's is a chain, their burgers are solid (veg. as well).

Cheuvront used to have an excellent, excellent burger but I recently noticed they've taken it off the menu. Too bad.

Sister restaurant of Joe's Farm Grill is Liberty Market, located right in Old Town Gilbert. Folks rave about the Tower Burger there. (Their egg salad sandwich is more my style, so I've not tried the burger yet.)

Can't believe I forgot to mention one my most recent burger destinations. You need to try Portalnds in downtown Phoenix. OH MY that was insanely delicious. Their fries are 7 bucks so I warn you! But they were to die.

I will have to try the burger at Portland's, as much on their menu has left us underwhelmed. Guess we need to learn to order better. Love the venue, but have obviously made bad choices.

The Chuckbox! It had fallen off my radar, thanks for the reminder. As long as you're in Tempe, try Four Peaks Brewery. Great burgers and a choice of beers - try the kiltlifter.

Oops, sorry for the confusion. KiltLifter is the beer; it pairs beautifully with the Four Peaks blue cheese-bacon burger. The battered fries are nothing to sneeze at either. All in all, a very decent meal (even if I'm a generation or two older than most of the patrons).

Not the last time I was there. They do wonderful lunch and dinner specials, though, and I think I've seen a patty melt as a special in the past. I still miss Four Peaks, now that I live in San Diego - nothing quite matches it!

I went to Stax, tonight, after a long hiatus. They've gone overboard with their menu, too. They now have several mac and cheese variations, plus a create-your-own option. More sides than before, too. My burger was tasty, but, overcooked. The spicy slaw was a little too much like kim-chee, and drowning in peanut oil. I was steered me away from ordering a couple of other sides.

Okay, so my wife and I just got back from Delux. I ordered the Deluxe burger and my wife got their classic burger. Although both were good, they weren't anything worth raving about. Their regular and their sweet potato fries were solid. We loved em. The biggest disappointment was that they only had 3 different burgers; Deluxe, Classic, and Turkey. A little more burger variety would have been great. Overall it was a fun experience and wouldn't mind giving Delux another try in the future.

Their menu is now much bigger than it used to be. They originally went off the In-N-Out model: Do one thing, and do it better than anyone else. Now they do a few more things, and they don't do the burgers quite as well as they used to.

I still like the Deluxe burger though. That maytag cheese is the best. I agree with JK though, I also think they opened the spec on the hamburger a couple of years ago and it shows. Still the best in town by far though. For a more topping intensive experience, Arcadia Tavern has a great "build your own" menu with a wider selection if thats what you're after. Bacon-guac-mushroom-salsa floats my boat!

I think this is why I like Delux.

Why does a burger joint need 10,000 different iterations of the burger? It's like you said, do one thing and do it well. Make a great burger, offer an option like cheeseburger and let that be that.

But I agree that Delux should not have expanded their menu to include things like sandwiches and dogs.

Burger + sweet potato fries + late hours = success in my book.

I completely understand the idea of a burger shop having one or two burgers and doing them really really well. However, that's not the case with Delux. Their meat is awesome. It has such a great taste, but thats it!. The rest of the burger has nothing alluring about it to keep you wanting more. I'm not the type of person that wants mac and cheese slopped on my burgers or a pizza burger or anything like that. I admire the creativity, but I'm happy with a plain old fashioned burger. I just want a damn good one.

On another note, do you guys dig the fruit they serve with their burgers? Ours was warm and had no flavor.

Regarding the "fruit cup" at Delux, I only eat it because I was raised not to waste food. It's below their standards of quality. I also try to time my visits to avoid being served yesterday's bun.

That's exactly what I was getting at. When they first opened the food menu was a lot smaller... I think just the classic and delux burgers, a grilled cheese sandwich for the vegetarians, green salad, soup of the day, and the regular or sweet potato fries. Now that they've added on panini and various deli sandwiches, the burgers have suffered. They're still good, but not the greatness they once were.

And the fruit they serve with the burger now is a marked improvement over the original garnish: Carrots and beets in julienne spirals. It was pretty, but I don't think anyone ever touched the thing.

I liked the beets and carrots, very tasty! you don't get fresh beets very often. The fruit is a waste of plate. The best place for fruit garnish and also a dang good burger is AZ88. Random addition of new venue.

Delux will probably give you the julienned beets on request. They still put it on top of their beet salad. I don't know about the carrots.

It is a departure from the Valley, but I think the best burger in the state is up at Diablo Burger in Flagstaff. They are a slow food joint and serve local grass-fed beef. Tiny storefront, small wine and beer list, exceptional care taken with every ingredient and dish. The type of good people I am happy to give my money to.

Oh yes -- not overly thick or large or too sweet, but incredible quality. I also like the herb blend they use on their twice-cooked fries.

I'm glad! I wish we had a little storefront turning out burgers like that down here. I like Delux, and I'm glad to hear the beet-carrot garnish is still an option, but grass-fed beef is my preference. Tastes like the beef I had growing up in Hawaii, since moving to the mainland I've found ground beef to be bland and mushy.

I checked out the Wood Flame Burgers page and they are also using organic Niman ranch beef, same as Delux -- I will give them a try one of these days, I am out west a couple of times a month.

Thanks for the update on Delux. You touched on both reasons why I stopped eating there a couple of years ago: (a) the burgers on my final visits were trending toward bland mushiness and (b) I wasn't crazy about supporting Harris Ranch.

Looks like it might be time for me to give them another shot.

No, Niman Ranch is still grain-fed beef -- I meant I prefer Diablo's grass-fed beef, or making my own burgers from grass-fed beef, to most of the alternatives. Delux'll do in a pinch :).

I have had several good burgers at Delux, but have also heard great things about Zen Burger [SP?]

For me, the best is the pool bar at the Phoenix Country Club, with their men's grill version being second, but those are not really in the mix.

                                    Good luck and enjoy,

OMG..you mentioned the classic old school Country Club!
Without mentioning names, we knew some of the founding fathers and we would always go to see the men's club and the women were separated and could only show up I believe on Tuesdays and from memory, there was a different chef too.
That burger was the ultimate man cave burger!
                                      Talk about old PHX money!

There are many, who tell that the "outdoor grill" has better burgers, but that has not been my experience. Maybe it was due to an impending tee-time, or something else, but the old Men's Grill" got my vote. Things have changed, and many of the old customs have died off. There has been a renovation, since I last played there, so I'm not sure of all of them. I also do not know if their burgers are still as good. Gotta' stay in town more, and get down that way, as it does cost me mightily.

I started a similar thread on the NOLA board some years back. We used to live there, but had been gone for a long time. All of the "old places," were no more, and we usually are trying to squeeze in one more fine-dining restaurant on our trips, so I've not had the chance to try some of the "new kids on the block." They could be better than, say Ruby Red's, but I find that hard to believe. Still, I just do not know.

You're likely hearing good things about Zinburger, one of Sam Fox's newest places. The Phoenix one is at Biltmore Fashion Park; there's also one on the north side of Tucson.

Yes, that is the location. I have not made it by yet, so cannot comment, but have received several glowing recs.

Do you have any feelings on it? Though we might not like all the same things, I always greatly appreciate your perspective. Being a Fox restaurant does not bode well for me, but there ARE some exceptions, and this might well be another.

I have not been to Zinburger. My lone experience with Fox restaurants (getting completely snubbed at Olive & Ivy) has left me no desire to patronize any of their restaurants, and any comments I hear of fellow industry folk's experiences do little to change my mind. They seem to know their audience well, and it sure ain't me.

Zinburger is horrible - especially with delux right down the road - went there once and no one in our party thought it was good

For those, I kept asking myself, "what's the big deal here?" However, I ask myself the same question with some non-Fox places. I thought that it was just me, as many get rave reviews here, and from some pretty respected sources. Perhaps I just hit 'em on bad nights?

Of late, the best burgers I've had have been the Pica Rico burger at Gallo Blanco Cafe and the Brasserie Burger at Metro Brasserie, neither of which is particularly close Gilbert, however.

Wood Flame Burgers in Goodyear is out of the way for many people, but its good. Small menu, no-frills ambience, but the ingredients are quality, the preparation has been good when I've been and those duck-fat fries are as good as the ones in fancy places.

I like to hit this place when I'm driving to San Diego or LA, its on the way and makes a nice stop before hitting the open desert. I'm not sure the lack of ambience makes it worth a trip on its own, but if you are in the area, I think its a good stop.

The seemingly hastily written msg (written on butcher paper of course) taped to the door said something about they are "temporarily" closed while they relocate.

On the lower priced end, I did not see 5 Guys mentioned much in the thread. There are a few locations around the valley. Also Smash Burger does a good job for my tastes in Tempe.

Of the higher end burgers, The Grind has done a good job by me. Looking at the photo is making me hungry again. I was underwhelmed recently by the Big Ass Burger at Roarking Fork. I also like Indulge Burger near Scottsdale Road and Shea and Liberty Market near you in Gilbert makes just about everything well.

Me and my wife ate out at the Grind a few weeks ago for the first time and it was absolutely awesome. My wife didn't like hers (she got their steakhouse burger). Mine was insanely good. It was their sweet and spicy burger. I wish I lived nearby so I could get it everyday. Everything on their menu is overpriced from their french fries and mac & cheese to their veggies (It as like 5 bucks for 3 sprigs of broccoli). If anyone plans on hitting up The Grind in the near future, I definitely recommend the Sweet and Spicy Burger. And for desert, definitely try their donuts and salted butterscotch sauce. Sooooooo good. The donuts are a little bit bigger than Cheerios but the taste is so worth the price.

I've been to 5 guys a few times. They make an alright burger. Tons of hype behind em, but I think In and Out puts out a better burger for a better price.

Liberty Market or Joes Farmgrill will probably be my next burger stop.

+1 for Joe's Farm Grill. Don't forget to get the sweet potato fries. Everything is great at Joe's, one of my favs.

I suggest trying 25 Degrees up at CityNorth in northern Phoenix (by Desert Ridge mall). They have some fantastic burgers. Their tuna burger is really good as well. It is probably my favorite of these burger bars that have been popping up all over town in the recent years since the success of Delux.

Lenny's and Lucky boy are great options, but the best in town has to be the Roaring Fork at Chaparal and Scottsdale Rd. Great option if you can wait until they open at 4PM. The burgers are cooked to order so Medium means Medium. The 2/3 pound burger will do you right.

No one mentions Heart Attack Grill. One of the best burgers in the valley. If you just want a good simple burger then thats the place to go. If you want all the fancy fixins two hippies is one of the best.
