redwood city - yuppie-friendly places and/or gastropubs?

hi everyone,
we just moved up to RWC from los angeles. looking for places similar to the following from LA:

yuppie places:
curious palate

father's office
golden state
tony's darts away

by "yuppie places" basically i mean places that have:
expensive sandwiches/salads
usually a one-word name
at least a superficial effort a local/sustainable sourcing
concrete floors + modern decor

any suggestions?

  1. Search Martins West and The Refuge.

    Martins West
831 Main Street, Redwood City, CA 94063

    1. Welcome!

RWC is pretty small and not very "yuppie" (your word not mine). Let's hit the surrounding towns.

      City Pub - RWC
      Sprout - PA
      The Counter - PA
      Xahn - MV
[Martin's West and The Refuge are right on]

Remember, Oakland's a 35 minute drive away, where you can go to Plum, Gather, and similar. I suspect the restaurants you're talking about are in a particularly hip or hipster part of the entire LA basin, not in the RWC equivilent.

Greater RWC is much better at hole in the wall chinese and mexican. Check out the Big List of Tacos.
      Now that's RWC!
[my favorite is post-Big List - Los Gemelos. Awesome.

Gather is just across the street from a major school of learning in Berkeley. And the drive to either Plum or Gather is probably closer to 1 hour except at 2am when both are closed.

My house to plum is 35 minutes at 8pm - I've clocked the run to Yoshi's and Cafe Van Kleef a few times, and those are close to plum. I live in Menlo Park. While I may drive faster than a normal person, it's doable in 40.

          Gather, yes, that's much longer.

For calibration, it takes me 40 minutes to drive from Menlo Park to San Francisco at 10pm, so I'd allow closer to an hour to get to Plum in Oakland if one drives only slightly over the speed limit like I do. :-)

I'm a fairly frequent patron of the Los Gemelos truck but have tried the walk-in place on Middlefield. How does it compare?

            1. re: RWCFoodie

Sorry, I've only gone to the walk-in!

              1. re: RWCFoodie

Surely it can only be a vast improvement over the sad operation it replaced -- Tacos Elizabeth. That block (Middlefield x Dumbarton) is close to the red hot center of the taco world. If I'm down there, I'll usually walk the extra half-block to La Casita Chilanga. But I'll eventually get around to Los Gemelos. Is the truck still on ECR in front of the smog station and Enterprise?

                1. re: Sushi Monster

It is a true gem. There's an open kitchen with two or three women using standard kitchen techniques and fresh ingredients. Standard blenders, cutting boards, everything done like your mom might. Tastes that way, too.

                  1. re: Sushi Monster

From what I've seen lately, the truck is still on ECR, generally at the smog place near the drive thru coffee kiosk. Their hours seem to be approx 9:30 am - 3:00 or close to that.

My absolute favorite is the cabeza...

                    1. re: RWCFoodie

Glad to hear the truck is still there. A while back, it never seemed to be in place during those hours and I thought it might have moved on.

The storefront is quite small, but it has a warm cozy feel. You can see los gemelos (boy twins) there.

Yes, the truck has moved around a bit. Was across the street in the vacant restaurant lot which was nice because there was tons of parking there. They seem to be at the service station every time I drive by (and stop for a cabeza and tripitas fix...) Will have to try the sit down shop.

Whenever I'm on that part of Middlefield the siren call of La Casita Chilanga's torta, La Tesoro grabs me, - but only when the parking gods are smiling!
