white truffles in boston?

Anon12 Oct 14, 2010 08:38 AM

Hi everyone, last post I saw on this was from 2008 - wanted to discover if anyone knows of shops or restaurants that have white truffles? Or is it too early in the season? Thanks,

Boy, would I like to find out as well. Great question!

I tend to use white truffle butter instead these days, since it is much easier to find (and much cheaper!). I prefer it over truffle oil, which can have a metallic taste to it.

Ina Garten likes the truffle butter from this company. Might be worth checking out if you have trouble finding truffles around here.

Marc, that company also has an amazing Mousse of Duck Foie Gras. As for the white truffles, you can get them by calling Dean & DeLuca, starting at $300 an ounce.

So do I! Lots of bits of truffles in it . Toss it into pasta or rice or smooth it over an eggy dish. I haven't seen it around Boston lately. Anyone see Dartagnan Truffle Butter?

Oddly enough, while looking at various cheeses at Grafton Village Cheese in VT this weekend, I stumbled upon D'Artagnan black truffle butter. Tried it tonight---all I can say is mamma mia, it's good!

And, you didn't bring a tub back for me!

Glad you enjoyed it. Have some with some eggs for me then.

La Morra in Brookline sent out an email a couple of days ago with the title 'Arriva Tartufi Bianco', which I assume means 'white truffles have arrived'. It wasn't clear if they are now on the regular menu or only at a special dinner they were announcing, so it might be worth a call there to find out.

I heard that Asana has started serving them but don't see anything on their website, so you might want to check...

Erbaluce currently has a wonderful super-yolk pasta with additional duck egg yolk cracked in and copious amounts of white Alba truffles shaved tableside. Pretty heady tubers, dude.

Formaggio Kitchen is Cambridge carries them in season. They used to also order them for folks. Not sure if they still do.

Grotto used to do an amazing fresh truffle over fresh pasta dish in season.

Formaggio has had black truffles in the past, don't know if they have white ones, nor if they have them yet for the season, but definitely worth a call.

I have had Alba truffles at Coppa twice now, and both times were excellent.

On my most recent visit (this week), the truffle special was sheep's milk ricotta gnocchi with Parmigiano-Reggiano and copious Alba truffles. Delicious.
