Bar Harbor/ Ellsworth Report

  • 2

I lurked on these boards for a while and relied on many of your suggestions before a recent trip to Bar Harbor. Thanks to all previous posters. You did not steer me wrong.

On our drive down to Bar Harbor we stopped at Martha's Cafe in Ellsworth. It has a really nice local atmosphere and you can't beat the sparkly red vinyl booths. We had two crab omelettes, a side of sweet potato pancakes and a corn muffin. All were very well prepared and delicious. The corn muffin was sliced in half and warmed on the grill which was an excellent touch. The omelette was $9.50 which was entirely reasonable but if you avoid crabmeat, this place is super cheap.

In Bar Harbor we enjoyed McKay's Public House. I read about some of the other places in Bar Harbor like Maggie's and Mache Bistro but as they didn't have Lobster Mac and Cheese on the menu I decided not to patronize them. McKay's had nice service and a warm atmosphere. Our shrimp fritter appetizer was so/so but the mac and cheese is obviously the signature dish of the restaurant and it didn't disappoint. A generous portion of lobster was mixed with a truffled cheese sauce. It was perfect, not too heavy and not too creamy. The lobster wasn't drowned out by the other flavors. A chocolate pumpkin cheesecake to finish was also good.

In SW Harbor we caught a break at Beal's Lobster Pound as it was the last day of the season. Cheap fresh lobster--I don't really know what else to say. Pick your guy from the tank and let boiling water do the rest. It was a fun experience dockside.

A bit stuffed on seafood and snacks we decided to go easy and ended up at Rosalie's Pizza. It's pizza--plain and simple; a take out place filled with families and teenagers. It was also better than it had a right to be. When I walked in it brought back memories of Godfather's Pizza which made me a tad worried. No reason to be the Rosalie's Special with mushrooms, spinach, garlic and oil was tasty.

  1. Glad you had good eats on your trip. Thanks for reporting back.

    1. It's always nice to hear good reports on our suggestions! I'm a big Martha's fan and the crab dishes are well worth the extra $$. I had the crab benedict which was amazing.

I've only eaten at McKays once and thoroughly enjoyed it.
