  1. If your willing to go out to Za in Pennington, try Blue Bottle Cafe in Hopewell. Better than either Za or Mezzaluna and its also BYOB. Here is some info and the current menu.

Just to chime in, my friends and find the food perfectly acceptable at Za, but we feel it is overpriced, when you can get a better quality meal at Blue Bottle for around the same price or less. I actually enjoyed eating at Za very much, but Blue Bottle blows it out of the water every time.

    2. One of us is coming from the phila suburbs, the other from Manalapan NJ so Princeton is about half way. Looked like Za was also halfway but hopewell seems farther from the phila area person. We need a byob that takes reservations in or very close (5 mins) from Princeton. Thougths on the 2 I mentioned or another suggestion? Thanks,

Za and Blue Bottle are relatively close to each other but Blue Bottle is closer to Princeton. 10 minutes maximum.
Za is good, always have enjoyed my meals there but as Heatherb also mentions above, Blue Bottle is a step above in quality of food and service. All IMHO of course.

      2. what about Gennaro's?

        1. Another downtown Princeton BYOB is The Ferry House. There is also Acacia in Lawrenceville on Rt 206.

Well, you can put me in the Blue Bottle Cafe column! Imho, it is one of the best BYOs in the state. However, if it comes down to Mezzaluna or Za, I would choose Za. It can indeed be expensive but I feel the cooking is better at Za.

I also like the other restaurants mentioned here and would add two more. The Blue Point Grill is a great seafood place while Camillo's Cafe in the Princeton Shopping Center is an Italian restaurant. Don't be fooled by the word 'cafe'. Camillo's is much more as you can see from the menu on their web site.

          2. Hands down. Another vote for Blue Bottle. Za and Blue Bottle are really only a few minutes apart from one another. From Philly, instead of taking 95 to 31, they can take 95 to 29 to 518 and the time difference should be negligible.

            1. I'd go with La Mezzaluna. It's right downtown, and you can't beat their specials. Love the fish that is served and de boned table side. Make sure to order the flambé for dessert, also cooked table side, and the homemade hazelnut gelato is to die for.

If you need vino, CoolVines just opened their new location a month ago, and their selection rocks! Mark and his crew are some of the nicest in retail! -mJ
