Looking for Brains
We’re trying to sample different preparations of different animal brains—cow, lamb, pig, miscellaneous—and we're happy to go anywhere in the five boroughs. Does anyone have tips on restaurants that serve brains? Any favorites out there?
Thanks!

IIRC the last time I was at Karam (last summer) the guys told me that they weren't serving brain any more because "the city wouldn't let them." Ditto other Bay Ridge Arabic joints. Any intel on this? Obviously the city hasn't "banned" brains, but are these restaurants currently serving them?

I've seen brains as a special on the menu at Taqueria Coatzingo. I remember thinking they were goat brains, but dont remember. It was in spanish, but cabeza was definitely on the menu. Doubt its a regular feature, and that place is famous for running out of things so i'd call ahead.
There's another TC post here that mentions tacos de cabeza as a special: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/535335

cabeza can frequently include (or even, be) non- brain headparts. I'm a big fan of organ meats , though i prefer digestive organs, but its been my experience that it will depend on the place whether cabeza is synonymous with brains or is a mixture of other parts - ive had/seen sesos (brains) lengua, cachete (cheek), ojos (eyes) and at least a couple other parts (lips?) listed singly. id want someone specifically to tell me what cuts went into their particular cabeza mix, and if the op is a brain seeker who doesnt want it mixed with other parts this could be important.

Cheburachnaya in Rego Park has brains on the menu. I haven't tried them, but their sweetbreads are excellent, so I'm sure the brains would be good too.

In Manhattan:
"Mind Of Lamb" Ravioli @ DOB 111
Lamb’s Brain Francobolli @ Babbo
Brain on Rice @ Pakistani Restaurant (that's the name of the place, as far as I know - on 9th Ave in the 30s)
Poached Brains @ Sip Sak - Turkish place in Midtown East.
(Chow won't make links below b/c we're on the "Outer Boroughs" board, so you'll have to Google them...)
In Brooklyn, check out St. Anselm in WIlliamsburg - they have a whole menu of "Nasty Bits"
The Russian / Central Asian places out in Brighton Beach / Coney Island - Cafe Paris, Cheburechnaya, etc. Also the Middle Eastern joints in Bay RIdge / Dyker Heights - if Karam doesn't have them anymore, maybe Al Safa?

If its like the Queens Cheb, which definitely does have brains, they will be grilled. I think I'll stick to the sweetbreads.
