Special Occasion Dinner

We will be staying at the Loews Regency in early December and are looking for a one spectacular dinner during our stay. We dined at Gramercy Tavern for our anniversary a couple of years ago and are looking for an equally great dining experience. Any recommendations? Something in the general area of the hotel would be ideal but willing to travel if needed.

The obvious choice is Eleven Madison Park, a short walk away and one of the best restaurants in the city.

Unless I am mistaken, Eleven Madison Park looks like much more than a short walk. I am not opposed to a subway ride, just curious if there is anything close that is recommended.

I think you mean the Loews at Park and 61st, in which case I'd recommend Park Avenue ... It's the restaurant that changes its menu and decor four times a year. So it will be Park Avenue Autumn or Park Avenue Winter by the time you're there. parkavenyc.com

Le Caprice in the Pierre is also about a block away. I liked it and thought the room was lovely, but you may want to seek other opinions, because there have been mixed reviews here.

I very much like Le Caprice but I wouldn't recommend it for a special occasion dinner, particularly because the service I've had when I've not had one specific waitress has been iffy at best. And, while I think the food is good - I usually have the steak tartare - I don't think it is innovative or particularly interesting.

What about SHO (downtown in the Financial District) or The Modern Dining Room? I haven't been to either in awhile so you might want to read recent posts.
