Christmas dinner in Kohala, Waimea/Kamuela, or down in Kona

  • 2

We will be staying at Hilton Waikoloa Village in late December. We love local hole-in-the-wall restaurants and they may mostly be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas. We don't wish to dine at the hotel or in the chain restaurants in Kohala. Do you have any suggestions for where to eat on those days, such as where local families might eat if they went out, beyond the hotels? Barring that, which other hotels would you suggest (or avoid) for dining, and would they give us advance reservations if we're staying elsewhere? Even down in Kona is OK. In terms of our tastes, we like it simple and local. Thanks.

  1. So you know, local families spend time with families...they don't eat out on special occassions...for a beach experience go to Beach Tree at the Four Seasons, for a faux gourmet meal try Merriman's in Waimea...good luck

By way of belated update, we realized that you were making sense -- the little local hole-in-the-wall places we like would not be open on Christmas. So we had dinner at the buffet at the Hapuna Prince, which was convenient for us and hit a somewhat better (lower) price point than a lot of its peers. It was fabulous, as to the food, setting, and staff. And I am no big fan of buffets. We loved it, and would go back.
