West Side dining- memorable experience without the hefty pricetag
Is this even possible?
I've been reading all the reviews of Providence, Ortolan, XIV, Melisse, etc.
While they all make me swoon, so does the hefty price tag.
Does one need to spend hundreds in order to have an exceptional dinner?

Jiraffe and Josie, both in Santa Monica, are somewhat expensive but leagues less expensive than Providence, Melisse, and the like. Both have excellent food. While their regular menus may be do-able for you, Jiraffe also has a "bistro menu" on Mondays that is 3 courses for a good price (used to be something like $35, but it may have gone up, it's been a while). Josie has an excellent farmer's market inspired pre fixe on wednesdays that is 3 courses for something like $40. Both are also participating in restaurant week. You might also consider Hatfield's (I don't consider this on the West side, but in my book neither are Providence and XIV). They have a wonderful prix fixe with several courses for $59, available every day. In my book, Hatfield's gives the most bang for the buck of any fine dining restaurant in L.A. Yes, Animal also has excellent food, but it is comfort food in a no frills space so it doesn't feel a special occasion place (which is what I assumed you were looking for).

You still have time (until Oct 15th) to dine at Spago or Craft for only $44 per person as part of Dine LA week. Wonderful meals for a true bargain. I ate at Spago last night from the Dine LA menu and it was great as was the service.
