Sunday night Durham restaurant crawl

  • 6

My wife and I just celebrated a wedding anniversary and we wanted to try 3 courses at 3 different restaurants. As has been discussed elsewhere ( http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/615132 ) most places in Durham and CH are closed Sunday. Happily, we found 3 that worked great. We started at Vin Rouge. We were seated in the outdoor courtyard on a beautiful late summer evening. It felt like being in France. We had champagne (hey, it's an anniversary), classic moules et frites, and oysters gratinee. Very substantial and delicious. Next, we went to Metro 8 Steakhouse, a short stroll away. I had long heard good things about Metro 8 and was not disappointed. The chef/owners are Argentinean and the menu reflects that. We each had a glass of Malbec and shared empanadas and a house salad with steak added. The empanadas had a savory beef filling and the salad was fresh and delicious with their house sesame vinaigrette The steak for the salad was a nice portion of their churrasco steak: flank steak marinated and grilled medium rare. The interior is traditional and elegant without being stuffy. We will definitely go back for a full dinner some time. We finished with dessert at Watts Grocery. We love Watts Grocery and it was bustling on a Sunday night. We sat at their stylish bar and shared New Orleans Bread Pudding with glasses of tawny port. A great evening. We intend to try a similar crawl on another evening when more places are open.

      1. I had not heard anything about Metro 8 until now. I've heard of it but nothing on here as far as whether it was a hit or miss. Congrats to and yours! Do love Watts and Vin Rouge though.

Metro 8 seems to be off the radar of the foodie crowd. However, it always shows up with strong reviews if you search for Durham restaurants. The food and atmosphere were lovely. Must be the Argintinean twist. Oh yes, and reasonable wine prices.

I have been to Metro 8 a couple times. I found it to be pretty good and well priced.

        2. Thanks for the great review (and congratulations!). My husband works in Durham and is a steak lover, so I'm going to push him to take work dinners there sometimes. We're big fans of Vin Rouge - well worth the drive over from CH.
