Hershey's syrup... not how I remember it

We used to get the canned stuff when I was a kid, and I remember it being not only thicker, but also saltier than the (squeeze bottle) stuff I picked up recently: runny, supersweet, and not very chocolatey.

So - is nostalgia playing tricks on my tastebuds, or did they change the recipe?

  1. I don't know if they changed the recipe or ingredient proportions, but you are certainly not alone in your perceptions. Thin and more sugary. I'll be watching this thread to see if anybody has an "official" word on it.

    1. Nothing that Hershey's does anymore is any good. Their candy bars are grainy and don't have a good taste anymore. I'm sure their syrup is the same way.

      1. While they may have changed the recipe, I still think the stuff in the can tastes better than the squeeze bottle.

        1. Everything in squeeze bottles is runnier, for practical reasons. Hellmanns too.

Does it still come in a can? Your post gave me a flashback to drinking it out of the can opener hole when I was a kid, and amazingly I feel like I recall the taste and texture like it was yesterday. I tend to get U Bet now, but the old Hersheys was like brownie batter as I recollect. Their chocolate bars, besides being the diameter of a pc circuit board, taste more like wax than chocolate now, no enjoyment there. I prefer Trader Joes for my chocolate fixes.

          1. The syrup in the can is definitely better! ~~ Had a "discussion" with DW way back when...She said it was all the same...I said no way...Just so happened that we had both a can, and a plastic squeeze bottle in the house...I remember comparing ingredients...They were different, but I don't recall how....Now I want a can so I can take a swig out of the "church key" hole....:)

              the can:
High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Water, Cocoa, Sugar, Contains 2% or Less of: Potassium Sorbate (a Preservative), Salt, Mono and Diglycerides, Xanthan Gum, Polysorbate 60 , Vanillin, Artificial Flavoring.

              the squeeze bottle:
High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Sugar, Water, Cocoa, Contains 2% or Less of: Potassium Sorbate (Preservative), Salt, Mono- and Diglycerides, Polysorbate 60, Xanthan Gum, and Vanillin- Artificial Flavor.

looks like the squeezable stuff contains xanthan gum, more sugar & less cocoa.
