where should I take my son to celebrate for his 21st birthday?

I would like to mark the occasion with good food, fun, entertaining, not formal. It will be a ~ family group of 6. I don't want to encourage irresponsible drinking but thats what makes this a special birthday so lets get it off to a good start.

Thank you for the great ideas! We will definitely try both as we continue to celebrate. I thought about the Freemont area but didn't know about Brouwers. I did think about the Met also, again another great idea, and much appreciated! We ended up going to Ray's cafe and it was a good choice. We had a great time. Something for everyone and the service was superb. Took the cake with us and they were accomodating, brought it out with two big candles - 21! Very nice. Then my son took the rest of the cake with him to celebrate with his friends in the UW where he is a student. Hopefully responsibly! Thanks again.

Take him to a real man's restaurant and bar - the Metropolitan Grill. No other place will do.

I think Brouwer's in Fremont would be perfect. Good beer, good food, good atmosphere. We attended a family 50th birthday party there and the 20-somethings had as much fun as the 50-somethings. http://brouwerscafe.blogspot.com/
