Need Suggestions! NOT SPICE ROUTE or KULTURA, but...
Hello!
I am going out to celebrate a friend's birthday. We orginaly wanted to go to Spice Route, even though I've been there and think the food is not great, but more for the ambiance. We also want something in that tapas style, as we are a group of 7 so we would like dishes to share and in that price range. Both Spice Route and Kultura are booked up, so I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions of other restos in Toronto with the same kind of funky atmosphere as Spice Route (and hopefully better food!)
Also- the birthday girl has been to Lee's and didn't have the greatest meal there so that wouldn't be an option, though I have never been there myself..
I look forward to any suggestions!
Thanks!

re: forkcape
Bier market (the King Street location), Nyood, The Drake, Ultra (definately the closest thing to Spice Route scene wise - had a pretty decent meal there for a friends bachelorette as well).

Hey Forkcape,
Why not try Origin on King and Church? http://origintoronto.com/intro.htm
It certainly fits the bill in terms of funky interior and wide-ranging tapas style menu. There is no question that the food is better there than at Spice Route and while it will certainly be bustling, it's much less of a "bar-scene." (not sure if that is a pro or a con for your group).
Hits during our last visit were the items from the mozzarella bar, the middle-eastern cornish hen, and the miso cod dish (which we were initially reluctant to order because it didn't sound as unique as the other things on the menu).
Good luck
