Quick reco's for dinner around St. Clair and Yonge? West Ender here and clueless to Mid-Town eats.

Something along the lines of Rosedale Diner but upscale ideas are welcomed!

  1. Also, I have read this thread:

Just wondering people's more recent thoughts :)

    1. There are so many great spots in that area. Cava, Simple Bistro, Didier come to mind. Also you're close to the Summerhill LCBO.

      1. Cava! Cava cava cava!

Somehow, Cava doesn't seem to be anything like Rosedale Diner! But an idea - and certainly more upscale.

And Rosedale Diner itself is less than a 10-minute walk (Simple Bistro is even further, but a valid alternative albeit more upscale).

I have a 'hate on' for Didier - two examples af abysmal service and won't return (despite the OK food).

My best bet would be Earth, by Globe (2 minutes south from Rosedale Diner). Although on a Sunday maybe Cava because of their corkage policy that night - and I might be able to communicate with a companion (virtually impossible on other nights).

But there are also a whole host of Italian places that are closer in spirit to the Rosedale Diner - but that's not my area of knowledge (tomato aversion), so I'll let others chime in if that's of interest.

I'd agree with Earth or Cava over Didier. I actually really like sitting at the bar at Cava. Both are more upscale than Rosedale Diner. Avoid Avant Gout and Quanto Basta - I was at QB again this week and the food is truly mediocre. A few other options - Terroni or heading a bit further north, Tabule or Zucca. Yonge and St. Clair per se, but for Cava, is somewhat of a culinary wasteland, you really need to go a bit north or south.

        2. "Go south young person...." Pastis ($$$$) but worth it....need reserves tho

Oops, yes, forgot about Pastis. Another good upscale-ish option.

              Me too. Agree with Pastis.

          2. Used to work around here ... Spiga is fantastic! It's just south of Yonge and St. Clair, and serves pretty good Italian food. I would recommend Terroni's, but they're moving it farther south, and I'm not sure where.

            1. I live in the neighbourhood. At the intersection itself, I agree that there is nothing great there that's has good value.

I think Cava is overpriced and not as spectacular as people say it is. Just my .02 .
Terroni has just moved down to Summerhill right beside Five Thieves. Browne's Bistro is moving in soon I hear.

I say go south and go to Earth for a more upscale dinner with good value. I've had 2 great meals there. Get the fried ewenity cheese curds for pure comfort food goodness.

                Agree with those comments.
But throughout Oct-Dec Earth was booked solid EVERY night - so make a reservation.

              2. Cava all the way - it's our favourite restaurant in the city. The food is wonderful.
