“Suck dat head, pinch dat tail” Kelly’s Crawfish at Sacramento Central Farmers Market

Melanie Wong Oct 7, 2010 11:18 PM

At Sunday morning’s farmers market in Sacramento under the freeway, I saw the hugest crayfish I’ve ever laid eyes on at Kelly’s Crawfish stand. These were priced at $3.50 per pound or 3 lbs. for $10. They’d been pulled from the river south of Sacramento the day before.

Some smaller ones from the rice fields were available at $2.50 per pound. But I only had eyes for the very lively big guys. Three pounds made a great late lunch for two of us. These were big enough that it was worth going for the claw meat as well.

Here’s a local food blog post, “Crawfish Boil”, that has more photos of the crayfish from the same vendor.

The only bummer is that they are not consistently there. We joke every time my SIL wants to buy crawfish, they aren't there.

I put the contact info into the Restaurants & Bars database, but now the software is not displaying links. Here's the url, http://www.chow.com/restaurants/91917..., and the phone number to check ahead of time, 530-518-7818.

Thanks! I will let her know so she can prepare accordingly.

On another note, have you tried the sturgeon people before?

If you're talking about the guy who farms fish out in Sloughhouse, according to the SacBee, he's supposed to be selling at the farmer's market in Stockton on Saturdays, but I've never seen him there.
