Red & Black - japanese shabu shabu and bbq

  • 0

was headed to Hide-Chan with a friend of mine but en route, she tells me she is allergic to gluten. oops! luckily next door is the new Red & Black (the old Yakiniku Riki). Never ate at the old space but, had a nice enough meal of grilled meats and a couple salads:

+ amuses of cold chicken sphere and some sort of aspic
+ spicy code roe topped seafood salad
+ open chirashi
+ beef tongue to grill
+ kalbi (boneless) to grill
+ beef tripe to grill (salt flavor)
+ pork intestine to grill (marinated)
+ green tea with adzuki and jellies

all meats can be done as shabu shabu, teppanyaki-style, or "net" style, we alternated between the two grill styles. all the meat was lovely; gyutan was good, beef was good, tripe was great and intestines, really good. salads were both fine, lots of different dipping sauces and a lot of different textures and flavors. overall experience was excellent and we dawdled over a 3 hour meal completely relaxed and chill with perfect pacing (of course because we paced ourselves). great service and . . . . delicious. tempted by other menu items such as their various homey rice and noodle plates, and also their fancy-looking rolls that were all be-spattered as if by Wolfgang Puck; sometimes you just wanna go cheesy, you know? Place is quite affordable for what you get, perfectly pleasant and also, pretty much a full house, which is nice too.
